Publisher's summary

Ready Player One meets Gladiator in this high-octane thriller that mixes black-ops espionage with fight-to-the-death combat in the arena. In the near future, the line between entertainment and brutality has blurred.

Mysterious billionaire Cameron Crayton is a household name from televised spectacles in which prison inmates fight to the death, but his old shows pale in comparison to his new event, The Crucible, a gladiatorial tournament anyone can enter. The winner is promised unimaginable wealth and glory...if they’re able to survive a series of globally broadcast fight-to-the-death matches with medieval weaponry against the world’s most fearsome fighters.

Former black-ops operative Mark Wei wants nothing more than to be left alone to drink after sacrificing everything - including his family - in America’s covert Cold War II against China, a war won largely because of him. But there are rumors that Crayton’s background and business dealings involve shady connections to foreign powers, and soon Mark is convinced to reluctantly dust off his training, strap on a sword and armor, and enter the tournament arena as an undercover agent. It’s the most dangerous assignment he’s ever been given, and Mark quickly finds himself not just fighting for his life in the arena against trained killers, but racing to expose The Crucible’s founder’s secrets while navigating a viral phenomenon in which the stakes are literally life and death....

Excellent author

I listened to his earthborn trilogy. Which was excellent. Thought I would give this a try. It was a very entertaining story. Very imaginative and well thought out. Highly recommended. I wish he had more books finished.

Great storyline

Even though the storyline was great the ending was a little rough. But I can't wait for book 2!

Don’t sleep on Tassi.

This story is like a crock pot dinner. You put all the stuff in in the morning and at the end of the day, all the ingredients come together into one meal that tastes so good it makes you want to punch your mom. The Earthborn trilogy already had me as a Tassi fan, Herokiller cements it. Paul Tassi is an incredible writer. Well worth a read.

An amazing story from start to finish. The descriptive writing made me imagine I was watching a Hollywood movie. 10/10

An action packed roller coaster with only a couple of sore spots

This book was lovingly created for fans of the futuristic action and satire of films like Robocop and The Running Man. The characters are excellent, and the plot coupled with the excellent action sequences make for a gripping page turner (even in audiobook form). However, there are some slow moments around the middle of the book, and the ending doesn’t seem interested in wrapping everything up neatly, but that issue might be solved in the book’s direct sequel. This does not take away from the fact that I could not stop listening to this book. I hope Part 2 gets an Audiobook soon, but I might cave and buy the physical version.

Overall: Great story, gripping action, mostly excellent pacing, but not a super strong ending.

I can’t wait to annoyingly recommend this book to my action loving/video game savvy friends.

Good clean fun!

Fourth Paul Tassi book I’ve heard on audible :)
Look, it won’t win a Nobel, but it’s good fun with a captivating, breakneck story!
Hope they record the next one soon!

Good for teen boys

I guess most of the other reviews were written by YA enthusuasts...
If you are expecting a good story look elsewhere; this book was pretty bad.
Of course it is filled with graphic -very graphic - violence, but i expected that from the description. But the fight scenes are contrived and ludicrous.
The entire premise is absurd, even for a scifi book. The characters are all cliches; from the burnt out, emotionally damaged spy to the expendible private security guards protecting the evil billionaire. Every woman is beautuful beyond belief and everyone learns to fight with ancient weapons in 2 months.
Most combatants, who are there to fight ot the death, are likaable and want to make friends with the other people they are supposed to kill.
The ending, and the epilog, completely 'jump the shark' and are so ridiculous, i laughed out loud.
Again, unless you are a teen boy , Save your credit.

loved the Earthborn trilogy, this story not so much

narration is slow and boring and the story is nothing like the earthborn trilogy by the same author. tried returning the title but audible won't let me. make sure you listen to the demo before buying because it's going to bore your socks off
