Publisher's Summary

Ex-marine. Ex-wife. Ex-hausted.

I left my brothers in the marines to start a family. I left my ex-wife when that family drove her to drink and drugs. Now all I have left is my son - and he's all I care about.

I can't afford to make another mistake. And the girl who moved in next door? Mistake written all over her. She's got the sweetest smile, the hottest damn curves, and behind it all...a haunted look. I can't take my damn eyes off her.

My powerful body and coarse attitude make her nervous - and as she tries to start a new life away from her abusive ex, she has her own reasons to stay away. But we can't help it. We're f--king drawn to each other. And when she tells me how much she wants a baby...I make every mistake in the book. Because I want a family again.

I want her. My son. And a baby. And when her past comes calling...I'll fight to hell and back to keep it.

Contains mature themes.

D’awwww

My very first book by this author and definitely not my last. I loved the single dad theme with a the thrilling side story. It lent to an audio that I couldn’t stop listening to.

John Lane and Veronica Worthington were excellent narrators. They became the characters and kept me engaged in the story with their tone and inflections, even when portraying the characters of opposite sex.

Painful writing great narrators

If you enjoy being told every tedious thought rather boring characters have over and over and over and over again this book might be for you. Mr. and Ms. Worthington did a great job with what they were given and I will seek them out for further listening but not this author.

A must read!

This is my first book by Lara Swann, and I absolutely enjoyed it. This story is well developed with likable characters that have to root for them from the very beginning. This story is a quick read for a slow burn with a smooth writing style that grabs you from the first sentence.

On the run from her past, Naomi moves into a small town, ready to start a new one, which is easier said than done. Traumatize by an abusive and vengeful ex, Naomi is hesitant around men. Expect maybe the sexy single dad next door. Mack is dealing with his own unstable ex, Fiona. Due to their complicated past, the pair immediately fought against their attraction, which became increasingly difficult as they grew to learn about and trust each other. The progression and pace of this story were realistic, and I particularly enjoyed listening as the pair came together and as Naomi bonded with Tyler.

The one part about this novel that I didn’t like was the ending and how the situation with Mack’s ex was brushed over. Fiona was prominent enough that I wanted a more detailed closure between her and Mack. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, especially the narrators who brought the characters to life and kept me entertained throughout the entire story.

Hero Next Door must-read for people who enjoy a slow-burn sweet romance filled with external and internal conflict, suspense, and intrigue.

It was shockingly good.

In the beginning I wasn’t sure I was going to like it but I decided to give it a chance.
The story was very good, I liked the pace which made it seem like things would develop between them gradually. Which it did till he dropped the “I love you” bomb a little too soon based on how slowly everything was developing. Made me feel like the author remembered she can’t go over a certain page count so she sped up the process a little too fast and that made it seem unnatural to me. However, all in all I liked the story. He wasn’t overbearingly manly and possessive. She wasn’t some lame damsel in distress. I will be reading or listening the authors other books.

Incredible story about rebuilding trust

This is my first book by this author, but I will be on the lookout for other titles, as she truly captured the spirit of resilience and overcoming trust issues in both main characters.

No such thing as an Ex–Marine

I thought this was a pretty good story, and I enjoyed it. However the author continuously referred to him as an ex–Marine. There are no such thing as X–Marines! She also said when he hung around his Army buddies, Which was a little bit confusing since he wasn’t in the Army. Overall a good story though.

Totally worth a listen!

Lara does an amazing job of writing tense, thriller like moments and those natural instincts of a parent. Great true romantic build up which is emotionally satisfying with a healthy smattering of steamy scenes that enhance the love you feel for the characters. Totally worth a listen!

Female narrator didn't fit this book

I originally downloaded the book because of John Lane. He not only has a fantastically low, deep voice, he's a terrific voice actor too. The story wasn't terrible but the author has a bad habit of over narrating every single utterance of dialog. For example, "Hi!" 'Oh, man he's hot. I can't look him in the eyes. Oh no, what do I do? My stomach is jittery and my face is getting hot...' And on and on until: "I just moved in." 'Okay that was obvious. Why am I so nervous? Why is he staring at me like that? I will now dive deeper into my stream of consciousness for 2 more pages before I say anything more...' And on and on. It got really old, really fast. But the worst thing was Veronica Worthington, the female narrator. I felt like her voice didn't fit the character. She sounded too mature of what I believe the protagonist should've sounded like. And what really bothered me, what took me out of the story was her voice for Max. It sounded like her own voice! It's like she didn't even try to sound like a man! So when the story shifted to Max's POV and John Lane's deep, baritone voice came through, the disparity was too strong to try to ignore. I couldn't even finish it. It's too bad because I really like John Lane.

Good book

Good book but it was slow in spots. I will admit I skipped a chapter or two. I loved the narrators though.

really nice HEA

It's the first I've read of this author and I enjoyed the lighter take on a sensitive subject. Had some steam, romance and the hot alpha. it was sweet and on the gentler side. John lane's deep voice is awesome., and it's the first I've listened to veronica. she's narrated nicely and brings Naomi's character to life.

AWESOME STORY

I loved this book! With the ending being obvious when reading the blurb, a lot of my friends ask me how I 'enjoy something that I know the ending to?' but as I hope most passionate readers know, the main part of a book isn't the ending to the story. It's the twists and changes in the story that make it what it is, not the ending. The romance between Mac and Naomi was awesome, with the looming sense of danger and protection warring with themselves in Naomi's life. Tyler is also the cutest kid in this book with an adorable personality that makes you swoon when a cute kid is around. I listened to this as an audiobook and loved the narration, I had no need to change the speed and didn't cringe at their speaking. I don't regret reading this book and would definitely recommend this to those who like this genre. I loved this book!
