From New York Times bestselling and Hugo Award-winning author T. Kingfisher comes Hemlock & Silver, a dark reimagining of “Snow White” steeped in poison, intrigue, and treason of the most magical kind

Healer Anja regularly drinks poison.

Not to die, but to save—seeking cures for those everyone else has given up on.

But a summons from the King interrupts her quiet, herb-obsessed life. His daughter, Snow, is dying, and he hopes Anja’s unorthodox methods can save her.

Aided by a taciturn guard, a narcissistic cat, and a passion for the scientific method, Anja rushes to treat Snow, but nothing seems to work. That is, until she finds a secret world, hidden inside a magic mirror. This dark realm may hold the key to what is making Snow sick.

Or it might be the thing that kills them all.

"Pickens adjusts her approach appropriately for several characters...[Anja's] enthusiasm and wonder are delightfully narrated, and so too is her horror as she learns the truth about the alternate realm and its creatures." — AudioFile

Praise for Hemlock & Silver:

"A new favorite! Hemlock & Silver achieves the extraordinary feat of feeling both classic and unique. Masterful storytelling with an unforgettable heroine, creepy magic, and a fantastic cat! I almost wish I hadn't read it so I could read it again for the first time!"—Sarah Beth Durst, New York Times bestselling author of The Spellshop

"Eerie and aching, I've loved everything that Kingfisher has written but this might be my favorite."—Cassandra Khaw, USA Today bestselling author of Nothing But Blackened Teeth

"A darkly enchanting tale of poison and power. Beautifully crafted and utterly spellbinding."—Holly Black, New York Times bestselling author of Book of Night

"Hemlock & Silver is T. Kingfisher at her best—clever, romantic, and a hell of a good time."—Hannah Whitten, New York Times bestselling author of For the Wolf

"This is T. Kingfisher at her finest. Continuing in her tradition of horror-tinged, fairytale-inspired storytelling, Kingfisher pairs a wonderfully offbeat fantasy narrative with her signature wit, which compares favourably with the likes of Terry Pratchett. It's impossible not to root for our clever, unapologetically bumbling protagonist, Healer Anja. Hemlock & Silver is as delightful as it is impressive."—Heather Fawcett, New York Times bestselling author of Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Fairies

"Utterly delightful… Kingfisher wows."—Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW

Praise for the works of T. Kingfisher:

"Full of melancholy charm. . . . it’s such a pleasure to read."—The New York Times

"T. Kingfisher’s delicate, bittersweet style of fantasy is like nothing else on shelves at the moment. . . . a perfect blend of sharp-edged humor and horror-tinged heart."—Paste

"Kingfisher never fails to dazzle."—Peter S. Beagle, Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Award-winning author of The Last Unicorn

"Kingfisher’s fairyland is full of teeth, wonder and horror; what’s dark is very dark, but what’s good will give you warmth. By the last page, my heart was mended.”—NPR

"A wonderful entwining of darkness & whimsy."—Travis Baldree, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Legends & Lattes

"Refreshing. . . . a true comfort read, in which gentleness endures despite outrageous cruelty.”—The Washington Post

"Absolutely delightful and full of charm and truth."—Naomi Novik, New York Times bestselling author of A Deadly Education and Uprooted

“Haunting and unusual." —Tamora Pierce, New York Times bestselling author of the Tortall series

At this point, I would probably call myself a fan of T. Kingfisher — I love her fantasy and children’s books, but not all of her books appeal to me — not cuz they’re bad, just not my interest.

My personal favorites are her reinterpretations of fairly tales and I was super jazzed for this one. The writing was really good, and I even got down with the cozy love story vibe which I saw coming pretty quickly. The premise was cool for this one, but by the end it didn’t feel like Snow White at all. I would have like to have seem some of the old horror references - dancing with red hot shoes and some of those elements we have lost to Disney sanitation. The connections that were there: mirrors, evil queen, random reference to lead-based red lipstick, felt more tenuous than natural. To not have Dwarves in some capacity felt odd to me as well.

I think I would have liked it more if it wasn’t cast as a reinterpretation, but rather a cool fantasy story set in the Paladin world. It did feel more at home in that world with the references to dead gods and saints and Javier and Aaron certainly seemed paladin-esque.

The cat was super cool 😎 probably my favorite character actually.

A fairy tale or cozy romance?

This book grabbed you from the beginning and didn’t let go! I tried to sneak in times to listen a little more because I wanted to know what happened. It was witty, making me laugh out loud many times. A truly well-woven story that was just enjoyable to listen to. Now to find the next book by this author I want to listen to next.

Totally Enraptured by This Tale

Another fairy tale retelling. Snow white , T Kingfisher turns it in a different unique story as well keeping the heart of the orginal story. In this story we follow Anja, a healer herbalist of sorts. She is approached by the king who asks for her help. Thinking that his Daughter Rose is being poisoned and the story blooms from there.
This was amazing written and when I finally started I couldn't put it down. Definitely a must read for T Kingfisher fans.

Once again, Kingfisher delivers a beautifully written story with great pacing, immersive descriptions, and delightful creepiness. This narrator seems to be a favorite of hers and I'm so glad because her voice is perfect. She puts a lot of emotion into the story without being overwhelming and really nails the sarcastic asides. This will be another book I hold close and re-read again. 💜
