Caught in a war between the living and the dead, which side will Maxine choose?

Boston, 1897

Death’s arrival in Boston was heralded by a crimson moon and screams in the night. The vampire king will claim what he wants in the city, unless someone is brave enough to stop him....

Maxine Parker’s life is an agonizingly solitary one, and not by choice. life. Her empathic ability renders it impossible for her to touch a living soul without killing them. But she cannot kill what is already dead.

Thrust into the middle of a war between the vampire king and three stalwart hunters, she finds herself drawn to Dracula’s alluring seduction. Giving in to her attraction to him would mark the end of her life. Will that be the sacrifice required to save the people of Boston from the plague of death closing in on them?

Dark fantasy and gothic romance blend seamlessly with horror in this gripping pause-resister.

Great Narrator, incredible writing!

I loved the battle of wits and deep conversations between Maxine and Dracula. I read so much fantasy romance... this one had SUBSTANCE and Complex characters which I really appreciate. The writing was so engaging and delightfully unpredictable. There's so much crap out there written at a 3rd grade reading level. This book gave darkness, magic, sexual tension AND incredible writing. The steampunk imagery was on point too. I'd gladly enjoy a movie version of this book. If you're ready to read something with MORE romance, (a true and beautifully profound joining of souls) then read it.

I had to warm up to the style of the narrator, I was almost distracted by his intense accents! But by the end I was applauding his performance!! He's a great narrator.

Loved it

Can’t wait for the next book in the series, it was well written, great dialogue between the main characters. The first time I ever rooted for the vampire.

I really enjoyed reading this

I've audioread more than 3 months worth of mostly romantic fiction, and I skipped over this title several times because I rarely am into vampires. This was refreshing enough for me to doubt future such dismissals.

Too Much!

I thought it was a good storyline but, I just couldn't get past his personality in the first five or six chapters to see if he somehow change to a completely different person. And she takes pragmatism a bit far. I cringed through the chapters I did listen to.

Surprisingly Complex As Well As Fun

I thought this would just be a fun diversion, but honestly the character of Dracula was both surprisingly complex and enjoyable snarky. Loved the story straight through.

Omg love me some Vlad!!!

This was an amazing story where you root for the Gillian. Worth the listen. Only thing I wish is a female voice for the women but Joel did a great job regardless

Loved the story. Hated the narrator.

The story is compelling even though it’s a bit of a slow start. I listened all the way through because the story was so good. The narrator, not so much. He’s very talented at performing various character voices but he pronounces the H in any word starting with WH like it’s the entirety of what he’s being paid to perform. “She WHithered WHile Alfonzo demanded she explain WHat she was doing. “ Every character uses the heavy H no matter WHat. It distracted from the story and from the performance. Maxine’s character sounds exactly like the tik tok character from user TalkoftheTownie https://vm.tiktok.com/TTPd47Ebhu/ that’s not a bad thing, just an observation. The story ends on a cliff hanger and I would be dashing to listen to the next book if not for WHat may be in store for me. I’d rather read it myself than listen to the H any longer.

A really good vampire story

If you want a classic stile vampire story this is it I have listened to both of the books in this series and enjoyed it immensely, to me it is far removed from the twilight esk stories which was what I have been looking for. The narrators voice took in the beginning to get used to but I feel like it’s always that way when listening to a new voice on audio, there are some scenes I was not comfortable with but I skipped over them and overall enjoy this I do really recommend it!
