Harrow the Ninth, the sequel to the sensational, USA Today best-selling novel Gideon the Ninth, turns a galaxy inside out as one necromancer struggles to survive the wreckage of herself aboard the emperor's haunted space station.
She answered the emperor's call.
She arrived with her arts, her wits, and her only friend.
In victory, her world has turned to ash.
After rocking the cosmos with her deathly debut, Tamsyn Muir continues the story of the penumbral Ninth House in Harrow the Ninth, a mind-twisting puzzle box of mystery, murder, magic, and mayhem. Nothing is as it seems in the halls of the emperor, and the fate of the galaxy rests on one woman's shoulders.
Harrowhark Nonagesimus, last necromancer of the Ninth House, has been drafted by her emperor to fight an unwinnable war. Side-by-side with a detested rival, Harrow must perfect her skills and become an angel of undeath - but her health is failing, her sword makes her nauseous, and even her mind is threatening to betray her.
Sealed in the Gothic gloom of the emperor's Mithraeum with three unfriendly teachers, hunted by the mad ghost of a murdered planet, Harrow must confront two unwelcome questions: Is somebody trying to kill her? And if they succeeded, would the universe be better off?

I was sad when I finished Gideon, but I was devastated when I finished Harrow. I felt like I just didn't know what to do with myself, as if someone turned out a light. I might be babbling, and completely unclear, but that is just what Harrow did to me. Even when I couldn't really follow exactly what was going on (I tend to fall asleep listening and have to go back and pick up strands anyway, here it was like, HUH?) I truly didn't care. The descriptive language and fantastic narration just kept me wanting more, yes please, more of this but what are you even doing?
I will definitely re-read both books before reading the next installment, and maybe then I will be clearer. Or not. I think discombobulation is just what Harrow is all about, but a brilliant off-balance befuddlement it is.

Having said that, it’s not a book for someone who has issues following too many stories at once. There is a lot of information to call up just at a name drop. It’s not a difficult read, but I would certainly not categorize it as an easy read.
I loved the book, and would recommend it. But consider this is fair warning. 😇
Excellent Book, But...
