Publisher's Summary

A deluge has flooded the high ground near Hanging Falls - but heavy rains aren't the only menace descending on Timber Creek. While on a scouting mission to pinpoint trail damage, officer Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner, Robo, stumble upon a body floating at the edge of a lake. Robo catches human scent, which leads to an enigmatic forest-dweller who quickly becomes suspect number one.

With help from veterinarian Cole Walker, Mattie identifies the victim and discovers an odd religious cult whose dress and manners harken back to the 19th century. As the list of suspects grows, an unexpected visit from members of Mattie's long-lost family sheds new light on her childhood as they help her piece together details of the fateful night when she was abducted at age two.

The tangled threads of the investigation and family dynamics begin to intertwine, but darkness threatens to claim a new victim before Mattie and Robo can track down the killers.

A Timber Creek K-9 Mystery

Review addresses the entire series. At this writing, the series consists of Killing Trail, Stalking Ground, Hunting Hour, Burning Ridge, Tracking Game, and Hanging Falls. All books are 9-10 hours of listening in audiobook format. More sequels to come.

Plot. The Timber Creek K-9 Mystery Series are police procedurals in a small town. The lead characters are Mattie Cobb and her partner, Robo, a 100lb German Shephard Dog. The overall stories stand-alone - murder the basis for good guys, bad guys and Mattie's small circle of devoted friends, mostly co-workers, and, of course, Robo. However, there is a sub-plot that traverses the entire series - Mattie's personal life. This includes a disturbing childhood incident, her current, fragile psyche, and a mutual attraction between her and a recently divorced veterinarian, Cole Walker, and his two girls. Each story comes to a satisfactory conclusion - but, start with book one to get full advantage of a budding romance.

Not so hot. Mattie's a little too fragile for the role, IMO - maybe that's just me. But, I don't think I'd be willing to put a gun in the hand of someone so .... personally breakable - not frail physically, but she always seems on the verge of tears - nightmares included. That and her continued rejection of Cole isn't real - he's handsome, unattached, financially secure, and is over-the-moon crazy about her. Gimme a break, Mattie!

Narration is okay, but problematic in places. The entire series is narrated by Nancy Wu - and at times she's a bit too breathy and whispering. A bit slow, so pumped the iPhone audio up to 1.4. No other issues with audio production,

Liked. Robo, of course! A gorgeous, devoted dog, beautiful in disposition, brains, and strength. A perfect representation of this magnificent breed. Robo will take pleasure playing with kids or a ball, protect Mattie with his life, and quickly bring a grown man to tears of terror. Great dog. The stories are interesting and realistic tales of small-town policing.

The Timber Creek K-9 Mysteries are not great literature and they're not intended to be; just curl up on the sofa and enjoy. Try not to glare at your own dumb dog. 🤪

Answers some questions, but misses others

I was looking forward to this book to get answers from the last books. They were answered however I really disliked several parts of this book (I’ll try hard not to give away spoilers)
1. Mattie comes across as a confused child instead of an experienced k-9 officer
2. The element of fear that seems to be ruling Mattie’s life.

I wish the author would stop having Mattie question her relationship with Cole.

So in light of all of the above, I will be exchanging this book.

A good read, but not such a great listen - again

I enjoy Ms. Mizushima's K-9 series with Mattie, Robo, Cole and crew. Ms. Mizushima manages to weave together Mattie's concerns regarding meeting her long-lost sister and grandmother around Mattie's investigation of a homicide (or two) through her boyfriend's sometimes tenuous relationship with his teenage daughter. It is a lot to handle for Mattie yet Ms Mizushima keeps it all moving along at a comfortable and a bit suspenseful pace. I like that I can listen to this series without wincing or worrying about gratuitous violence or that caring relationships blow up. I finally have decided, however, I will read in ebook format the next book in the series. I cannot seem to move beyond Nancy Wu's very soft narration which continues to feel out of sync with the nature of the grittiness of homicide detective investigations. Additionally, due to this soft, whispery narration I must continually remind myself Mattie is a strong woman and not a spineless female Ms Wu's narration dramatizes.

Well Done

Typically I listen to audio books when I am doing something else, like driving or mowing the lawn. Occasionally I find a book that is so gripping that I find myself listening at home instead of reading or watching TV. This series falls into the latter category. The premise is unique. Rather than being a rehash of the standard Metropolitan crime mystery, it is about a K-9 and his female deputy handler set in a rural Colorado backdrop. The characters are well developed with good backstories and the plots are interesting and flow smoothly. If you like a good crime drama, give one of these a try. If you also happen to have a close canine buddy, You don't want to miss this series of books.
