Great book

I can't understand why this book only has an average of 4 stars. It is great. It is intelligent literary fiction, and the characters are convincingly male and gay, perhaps that's why. It's not a romance as such. The plot is built around an attempt at a relationship, but it's not the lusty fireworks or angsty hearts and flowers of genre fiction. Instead, it is quite sad and fulfilling, leading to a mystery of sorts. Along the way, the strength of the MC's friendships are tested and found lacking. It is a book about betrayal and loss, about the insidiousness of politics at the national as well as local level, and the ruthlessness of political activists, be they congressional figures or community organizers. It is haunting and affecting. I heartily recommend it.

Adroit

A compelling read. Part novel of manners, part bleak mystery. Explores the narrators fall from innocence to a corrosive knowledge about how people use him as a tool to further their own ends. Reminiscent of Steinbeck's In Dubious Battle. Characters have depth . A slow burn toward the truth and a conundrum at the end. Well read. Fine vocal characterization s.

I could bearly finish it

Dreadful. The story was too slow, the reading monotone. I didn't enjoy it and will not purchase any other titles of the author
