Publisher's Summary

The explosive memoir of an FBI field operative who has worked more undercover cases than anyone in history

Within FBI field operative circles, groups of people known as “Special” by their titles alone, Michael R. McGowan is an outlier. Ten percent of FBI Special Agents are trained and certified to work undercover. A quarter of those agents have worked more than one undercover assignment in their careers. And of those, less than 10 percent of them have been involved in more than five undercover cases. Over the course of his career, McGowan has worked more than 50 undercover cases.

In this extraordinary and unprecedented book, McGowan will take listeners through some of his biggest cases, from international drug busts to the Russian and Italian mobs to biker gangs and contract killers to corrupt unions and SWAT work. Ghost is an unparalleled view into how the FBI, through the courage of its undercover Special Agents, nails the bad guys. McGowan infiltrates groups at home and abroad, assembles teams to create the myths he lives, concocts fake businesses, coordinates the busts, and helps carry out the arrests. Along the way, we meet his partners and colleagues at the FBI, who pull together for everything from bank jobs to the Boston Marathon bombing case, mafia dons, and, perhaps, most significantly, El Chapo himself and his Sinaloa Cartel.

Ghost is the ultimate insider's account of one of the most iconic institutions of American government, and a testament to the incredible work of the FBI.

Interesting story, but narration eh

Good book if your interested in FBI undercover work, or investigations in general. The detail about the cases is very fascinating. Some of the writing could have been better but it wasn’t bad. You just hear “you can’t make this shit up” a few times to many. But the narration was hard for me to get past at times. I think if I was reading the book as opposed to listening to it I wouldn’t have imagined the voice to be the way it was narrated. I almost didn’t buy it because of the narration on the sample. But I’m glad I did. Book was interesting overall and it’s a quick listen.

Pretty darn good

I really liked this insight into the FBI and the mix of truth about how it all works with the action in the stories

Great stories but a bit self congratulatory

If he had stuck to the stories of being undercover the highs and lows it would have been 5 star great!

At times it seems he wrote it to settle old scores with superiors and FBI HQ. To talk of people he felt did a bad job in their roles or organization. He also praises his friends and others that helped him.

Overall, I think the undercover stories made it a good book to listen to.

Amazing book

Amazing book, great stories that truly make you feel like you’re in the shoes and shadows of an undercover agent. The amount of pressure on the agents in these situations is incredible. MUST READ!

Bad audio, bad narration, bad story. Save your money.

Audio: The audio was extremely hollow in sound and had to be turned up loud to hear. Very poor recording job.

Narration: I’m guessing they chose the narrator because his raspy voice added to the “tough guy” persona that the author is clearly in love with, but it was serious hard to listen to without feeling like I, too, would get a sore throat. Coupled with the really poor recording quality, it made for a miserable listening experience.

Story: I lost count of the number of times I rolled my eyes. Here’s a quick synopsis of the story from the author’s perspective: “I’m the toughest and smartest guy who ever lived. I singlehandedly foiled every one of the most dangerous criminals in US history despite the incompetence of FBI management. I’ll say a few things that try to make you think I’m being humble but it’s hard to conceal this much awesomeness.”

Oftentimes I wondered whether anyone edited this book. There are frequent errors in the usage of the English language (words that don’t mean what the author thinks they mean), and the stories are very choppy and abrupt. At best.

Save your money.
