From USA Today best-selling author Aly Martinez comes a new heart-stopping stand-alone romance.
In the aftermath of tragedy, it’s strange the things you remember.
The deafening boom as the house exploded.
The paralyzing fear as I searched for my wife.
The blinding smoke burning my eyes as I carried her out.
But carved into my soul for the rest of my days would be the earth-shattering realization that the woman in my arms wasn’t my wife.
Bree and I were the only survivors - not that either of us were truly living after that night. As a single dad with nowhere else to go, I moved into her guest house. And somehow, through the guilt and grief, we forged an unlikely team.
It took years, but I watched the gradual return of her smile - slow and life-altering.
The two of us could sit outside for hours talking about nothing, and it filled the massive hole in my chest with new life.
I may have carried her out of that fire, but the truth was, Bree saved me.
As we healed, the secrets and lies of the past smoldered in the ashes, threatening to ignite again.
Our love was born from the embers, and together, we would go up in flames.

The two, who were not very close in the beginning, formed a bond over their grief and raising their children in the wake of losing their spouses in the fire. A plot twist in the middle is ultimately what brought them together as more than friends. I don't want to include spoilers but the plot twist is really good, trust me! Towards the end of the book there was yet another plot twist that I definitely did not see coming and I was afraid I was going to get a cliffhanger but somehow the author wrapped it up pretty neatly in the end.
Overall it was a good book and the plot twists were definitely unexpected. I didn't love the main characters though. There just wasn't a lot of substance to them that made them unforgettable to me.
The audio is narrated by Erin Mallon and Connor Crais. It was neither of their best performance but it had more to do with the characters they were playing than with their talent.
Good story but characters were kinda boring

Holy shit, I don’t even know where to start. This was a traveling book club pick and omg fuck this book, I absolutely loved it. Eason and Bree were an unlikely pair. But they were literally forged from fire. They are both married to each other’s best friend. Both best friends die in an explosion. The twists I did unfortunately kind of figure out but nothing could have kept me from feeling the utter betrayal and gut punch for each hit these two took. Their respective partners not only had an affair, but one was a narcissist/manipulator and the other a complete psychopath. They had planned to murder Eason and Bree, collect her insurance money and steal their kids. But only the cheating wife actually died, the cheating psycho dick made it out. Like the dude you meet in the beginning and the guy we finally see at the end we’re not the same man. Apparently he and the dead wife hated them enough not to just divorce them, but murder them for money on top of it, god I wanted more answers. But Eason and Bree found their happiness and peace. There was so much angst it made my stomach hurt and I read this in one sitting. Needless to say I’ll be picking up more of Aly’s books. God I feel like I went ten rounds and got completely rocked.
