#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In John Grisham’s first work of nonfiction since The Innocent Man, “the master of the legal thriller” (Associated Press) teams up with Jim McCloskey, “the godfather of the innocence movement” (Texas Monthly), to share ten harrowing true stories of wrongful convictions.

“Each of these stories is told with astonishing power. They are packed with human drama, with acts of shocking villainy and breathtaking courage. But these are more than just gripping true stories—they are a clarion call for reforming the tragic flaws in our criminal justice system.”—David Grann, author of Killers of the Flower Moon

John Grisham is known worldwide for his bestselling novels, but it’s his real-life passion for justice that led to his work with Jim McCloskey of Centurion Ministries, the first organization dedicated to exonerating innocent people who have been wrongly convicted. Together they offer an inside look at the many injustices in our criminal justice system.

A fundamental principle of our legal system is a presumption of innocence, but once someone has been found guilty, there is very little room to prove doubt. These ten true stories shed light on Americans who were innocent but found guilty and forced to sacrifice friends, families, and decades of their lives to prison while the guilty parties remained free. In each of the stories, John Grisham and Jim McCloskey recount the dramatic hard-fought battles for exoneration. They take a close look at what leads to wrongful convictions in the first place and the racism, misconduct, flawed testimony, and corruption in the court system that can make them so hard to reverse.

Impeccably researched and told with page-turning suspense as only John Grisham can deliver, Framed is the story of winning freedom when the battle already seems lost and the deck is stacked against you.

Each case was explained well by the authors. The cases and evidence clearly showed the conviction were a miscarriage of justice, leaving me with an emphatic feeling of helplessness, hopelessness, and anger.
I find it appalling that the prosecutors and judges in these cases were more interested in protecting themselves than actually justice. One of the most appalling was the retrieval and destruction of a hair that was found on a victim that would most likely have exonerated the wrongfully convicted.
The only thing I would leave out would be that many of these cases had the same pattern. Although necessary to tell the individual stories. Maybe other cases could have been selected with different patterns that led to the wrongful convictions and the continuation of the miscarriage of justice once the innocence became obvious.
However one pattern should be a lesson for all. If ever asked to come to the station to answer questions, never go without a lawyer. By the last few stories when I heard that the wrongfully convicted had entered the station without a lawyer, I wanted to scream noooooo!
An interesting follow-up or epilogue would be lessons learned from these stories to remain innocent.

Each case was well written and intriguing.

First and foremost, thank you to Grisham & McCloskey for this work. Certainly, it is the tiniest fraction of the injustices that plague our law enforcement procedures and judicial system and certainly presents very clearly the case for removal of the death penalty in this country. I practically held my breath for the entirety of this tome. As a society, we have so much work to do.

Takes your breath away.

I really liked this book. it's really a collection of stories and they're all true which makes it really hit home hard. it's scary really, I hope I never get arrested! I really feel for the people in this book in these stories. I had to keep reminding myself that these are true, not just another fiction book.

well done, but shocking

Good book and good set of stories, it just didn’t grab me. Possibly the stories were too long. I felt like I was listening to a fair amount of filler. I do recommend it though.

Worth the read

sad how corrupt our justice system can be and how many people are in prison that are innocent.
