It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

After his town is put to the sword and the children are taken to replace the fallen, an old man is out for revenge. He’s ready to fail at the most difficult challenge in the world: cultivation. Too corrupted to even take the first steps, the sly old elder simply agreed with those who told him that it was impossible. Then, he quietly ignored them, rubbed his hands together, and started anyway. He had always failed in what he did. The only thing that had never failed him was his sharp mind and philosophy. He would cultivate...no matter what it cost him.

hardest book in the series
Terry Schott is an amazing writer... and true to that he named this book fragmented for a reason... this is the hardest book to read in the series... it jumps around and it's very confusing.. this is not a book you want to read 5 minutes at a time you're going to want to take notes and read it all the way straight through as quickly as you can so that you don't lose any of the pieces.
The pieces are important for various other stories and for understanding how things develop and how they developed... but like I said it's a hard book to read and keep track of what's going on.
it is still very well written! this entire series is worth your attention and time 💜

The multi-simulverse begins to be explained
It has been almost 2 and a half years since I finished Book 7 which I became annoyed with from all of the different realities following similar paths and seemingly related but mostly still a mystery. I came upon Book 8 while looking for another novel and decided to give it a try after so long. I was pleased to find that Terry Schott decided to provide some information regarding the over-arching structure of these many worlds.
Fragmented introduces a few new characters but also includes many of the original cast from Dream and Tygon worlds. There also seems to be some high level subversion happening but as to why has yet to be explained. Then, some key character deaths occur due to the subversion and also due to unknown instability within the world spheres. One negative aspect remains in the story where some of the "mover/shaker" characters continue to converse in riddles and gibberish making little sense to the players and the listener which causes a frustrated listening experience.
Still, Luke Daniels narrating proficiency makes these intentional mind-game antics tolerable.
