Publisher's summary

The black forest. A place of legend and folklore. A place where the souls of the dead never rest.

A group of paranormal researchers head to the isolated forest with the hopes of capturing something that has evaded them their whole careers: proof of life after death.

The forest soon promises to deliver an investigation beyond what they could have ever hoped for. But things take a turn for the sinister when one of the group disappears in the dead of the night.

Ghostly apparitions, disembodied voices, and demonic things lurking in the darkness turn the adventure into a living nightmare. Will any of them escape with their lives, or will they all pay for not taking heed of the local legend?

And at the heart of it all, the evil Mother Sibbett waits, ready to show them what the afterlife really holds.

A supernatural horror novel that will resonate with fans of The Blair Witch Project and The Ritual. After listening to this terrifying story, you will never go down to the woods again....

Good right up until the last 1/4 or so

This book was good right up until the last 1/4 or so of the book where it just became disgusting. Talk of sodomy, bestiality, sexual perversions, sexual assault all occurring within a church. I found this personally offensive and insulting. I would pass over this book.

Mountford Takes Us Camping In a Haunted Forest

I really think that Lee Mountford has stepped up his game with this book and has really taken his horror writing talent to a new level. This was frightening on a lot of different levels and was not just spooky woods. I do think this may have been inspired by The Blair Witch movie, however it mainly be because of the initial setup of interviewing townsfolk about local lore and then the crew bumbling about in the woods. Once I started this story I had a hard time putting it down. This completely engrossed me and I was hooked immediately.

I loved the ghost hunting characters, which is rare for me, and really liked their interactions with each other. Compared to a lot of other ghost hunting stories, I think this provided much more character development which added more tension as things start to go awry. I really didn’t care for the characters at first, but they grew on me and as the story progressed, Ken really stood out. I think he made a lot of the classic mistakes people make in horror movies and you will have to listen to this to find out if he learns from them or pays the ultimate price.

The publisher’s summary points out that this story is for fans of The Blair Witch. I agree that if you liked the plot of that story you will like this. I think it does well to capture the initial fear most people had watching that movie for the first time. It also reminded me about a paranormal TV show hosted by Josh Gates that was filmed in the Hoia-Baciu Woods in Romania. Another story that keeps me out of the woods at night. The type of horror this book offers has a good range from psychological to demonic torture, so I think this story will appeal to a range of people. I often listen to some crazy hardcore horror and while I wouldn’t categorize this as that, it definitely was a solid haunted story. Throughout the entire story there were two things that really got under my skin, one was when someone spit into someone else’s mouth, the other was the ending.

Hannibal Hills has an excellent creepy voice, so if you want a horror story read to you it should be from Hills. His voice has the ability to get you stressed out and on the edge of your seat. His narration and accent makes everything a bit more intriguing as he escorts you through woods that you were warned to stay out of.

Strange and sick...

The premise of the story sounded promising and started out well, but I found it quickly becoming more gut-retching and literally disgusting. Way too much sexual depravity and gory. I kept waiting for something redeeming to occur but was very disappointed by the end. Made me sick!!! Going to see if I can return.

Excellent horror!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. One of the best horror novels I have listened to lately. Well developed story and characters. Terrifying in all the right places, without all the cliches and campiness of some horror stories. Highly recommend this book to horror fans. The narration and production is well done.

Best horror narrator around!!

Lee Mountford is fantastic creeptastic horror novel. I can't help but fall into his written words every single time. He really creates this entire world and does so perfectly. I don't generally get scared while reading or listening to horror books. Usually I get grossed out by the gore but I delight in the story. I can tell you with 100% honesty that I stayed up listening to this story one night. I was so creeped out that I stared at the door to my bedroom after my timer went off. It doesn't get much better than that!!

Now Hannibal Hills is a horror stories perfect voice... I said it... PERFECT. He has this perfect pitch and tone. I can't get enough of his accent. There isn't another narrator I would want speaking Lee Mountford's eerie and ultra crazy words!

This might be my absolute favorite Lee Mountford's supernatural horror book. I'd totally recommend this book if you like these type of books!

Not what I expected, but still a good story

The narrator was pretty good, I liked the accents, it was easy to tell who was speaking at all times. The story was good but dark with some occult topics, as expected. It started a little slow but became rather intriguing the longer that the characters remained in the forest. It was interesting and kept me guessing until nearly the end. The ending was a tad predictable. But the story was otherwise engaging.

Gruesome story!

Excellent narration combined with the twisted imagination of the author makes this macabre tale one that may just give you nightmares. You've been warned. Enjoy

A Terrific Horror Novel

There is so much excellent atmosphere in this horror novel, I will certainly be looking into the other series entries. I wasn’t thrilled by the audiobook narrator, whose reading runs more than a tad melodramatic. But the writing and story are fantastic. Reading the one star reviews for this title, I can’t help but laugh. I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinion, but most of them read as if people bought a ghost story horror novel expecting to read a political thriller or romance tale. Don’t let their nonsense dissuade you if you’re after an excellent horror story—this is a hell of a scary good time.

lots of turns and twists

I'm slowing becoming a huge fan of the author. his writing is the dark horror I've been looking for in books. I have read one of his novels before this but was totally surprised on the dark and twisted turn this story took. Blair witch project on steroids.

Terrible narrator

Sadly the narrator was not right for narrating a book so I just gave up . Daft voices , no expression , sounded like he was reading a shopping list . Sorry. However I do plan to read it myself as I'm into the plot

What a Nightmare.

My God, where do I start? I really wouldn't want to be inside your head Mr Mountford, the intricate detail in which you describe all manner of grotesque evil beings and their actions are...........mind shattering. Hannibal Hills was a perfect narrator.
I am so disturbed by this book, I'm off to find another by you. Keep them coming, and I'll keep reading.

Made my Nightly walk more than a little creepy.

An interesting story, that could have been extended much more, Jumping right into the thick of it, without a build up is sometimes good but when you want to believe you are reading of a long lost village in the Forrests of Scotland then Perhaps a few days is a little quick to reveal all, (where was everyone else looking) ,, The narration kept the route and suspense of the story in its right pace, So in essence an enjoyable romp of evil n lust.

Ok story but superb narration!

I love a good horror story but its not easy to find one. So I started to listen to this and was pleasant surprised. The story began really well and evoked a real sense of just how creepy the forest was. However I began to get bored in the middle of the book and I felt the sex/rape scenes were gratuitous and too long. I also didn't really care about any of the characters so it was hard to feel any sympathy for them.

The best thing about this book was the excellent narration from Hannibal Hills, who has the perfect voice for horror and his wonderful narration kept me listening to the end.

Good story, appalling narrator

This is a pretty good ghost story which the narrator has done his best to ruin completely. There seem to be only 2 settings. Whiney & pompous. And every character uses either one or the other.

I had to play the narrative back in my head many times to realise that what sounds like wingeing is actually meant to be terror, aggression or pain. It's off-putting and spoils what is otherwise not a bad book.

couldn't get into it

I normally like Lee Mounford's work but this one I found hard to get into. It didn't grab me at all and lost interest after the first couple of chapters.
It didn't help that the narrator was so awful in this. I imagine that words in capital letters would sound how he narrates. It put me off finishing the book.

Hannibal does a wonderful job

This is an intense story, then I can write can do it justice. The build was nice and slow in the beginning before the was a sudden twist everything got really intense towards the end. Hannibal did brilliantly, he was engaged and entertaining, he was wonderful for this book. Lee's writing was in a league of its own, I cannot wait to read more of his work. A brilliant book that I would recommend without hesitation.
