Publisher's summary

When FBI profiler Kaely Quinn's mother is diagnosed with cancer, Kaely takes time off work to go to Dark Water, Nebraska, to help her brother care for their mother. Upon her arrival, she learns of a series of fires in the small town, attributed by the fire chief to misuse of space heaters in the frigid winter. But Kaely is skeptical, and a search for a pattern in the locations of the fires bolsters her suspicions.

After yet another blaze devastates a local family, Kaely is certain a serial arsonist is on the loose. Calling upon her partner from St. Louis, Noah Hunter, and her brother's firefighter neighbor who backs Kaely's suspicions, Kaely and her team begin an investigation that swiftly leads them down a twisted path. When the truth is finally revealed, Kaely finds herself confronting a madman who is determined his last heinous act will be her death.

Religious overtones pull you from story in areas

I like the mystery of this series and the characters, but as I stated about the first book, the author tries to push the religious overtones too much in scattered areas. The story will be going along great and then a section of almost preachy dialogue hits. If that aspect seemed to actually be part of the plot or character development, I would understand, but it almost pulls you out of the plot and gets quite annoying. It doesn't add to or even mesh with the plot. Other than that, the mystery part of the story is rather good, so I continue to listen to the series.

Something very familiar about this book

Once again Traci Odom does a good job as narrator of this the second book in the Kaely Quinn series. However, the plot is very similar to the last book. Noah gets hurt and Kaely gets drugged and the killer is revealed. I felt the killer was not a revelation. It seemed obvious to me even early on and although there was a revelation at the end it was mostly unimportant and didn't add that much to the story. The delivery of the story was slow and steady without any real gotcha moments and once again Kaely's unusual talents were only lightly used. The family aspect was unnecessary with Kaely barely involved with her mother or brother. The christian aspect was a little more prevalent in this book but wasn't overbearing and for the most part played in well as a background issue. The romance aspect was kept a little better under control in this book and was a better fit for the story. All in all a bit of a disappointment after the first book but I will still probably read the third and hope it will have a little more bite to it. I can't say this is a good read but it follows directly from the first book so for strictly chronological reasons you may want to give it a try.

Fantastic

I can't wait for the next in the series!

What I loved:
-I love the perspecitve of an FBI profiler. I find it so interesting. Nancy Mehl did a great job researching.
-I love the depth to our character. I admire her and feel sorry for her at the same time.
-I like that I never know who it is, Nancy keeps us on our toes.
-I like that it's clean. This is a Christian series. I like that with this series, the use of God is very well done. I don't find it over the top. It explains how she copes with her horrible past. I draw strength from her faith instead of find it grating, as I can with some other more evangelical Christian books. I think if you are a believer, it won't bother you.

I can't think of any reason to not love this series. Buy it!

Great from start to finish

I listen to this book on my regular commute, but was sometimes tempted to drive around the block an extra time, because I didn’t want to stop listening.

love it, just a warning for some readers...

Really great book! Though some might totally be into this, this second book did lean in a little more heavily with the Christianity topic than the first one which I wasn't a huge fan of (felt forced), but still really great!

many suspects

I enjoy Nancy Mehl's two books so far in this series about FBI behaviorally Kali. I enjoy that there are a hand fully of suspects who are all fairly plausible, and sorting though is the hard work with so many honorable suspects giving you pause because of there flawed humanity. Good series, very low on the spicy, romantic side due to Kali's brokenness, but well written intro to all the suspects.

3 or 4 star story.

The author can stop with the overstating of Kaely's good qualities. A little too sappy. But overall a good story.

Excellent!

Really enjoyed the second book in this series. It's even better than the first one. Really engaging, I was trying to figure out who the arsonist was all througought the story. The narrator did a great job.
