Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money - the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

ABC News anchor Dan Harris used to think that meditation was for people who collect crystals, play Ultimate Frisbee, and use the word namaste without irony. After he had a panic attack on live television, he went on a strange and circuitous journey that ultimately led him to embrace a practice he'd long considered ridiculous. Harris discovered that meditation made him more focused and less yanked around by his emotions. According to his wife, it also made him significantly less annoying.

The Work is simply four questions that, when applied to a specific problem, enable you to see what is troubling you in an entirely different light. As Katie says, "It's not the problem that causes our suffering; it's our thinking about the problem." Contrary to popular belief, trying to let go of a painful thought never works; instead, once we have done The Work, the thought lets go of us. At that point we can truly love what is, just as it is.

Story
In the first half of life, we are naturally preoccupied with establishing ourselves; climbing, achieving, and performing. But as we grow older and encounter challenges and mistakes, we need to see ourselves in a different and more life-giving way. This message of falling down - that is in fact moving upward - is the most resisted and counterintuitive of messages in the world's religions. Falling Upward offers a new paradigm for understanding one of the most profound of life's mysteries: how those who have fallen down are the only ones who understand "up".

Publisher's Summary
Many people feel called to help others and change the world, but they just don’t know how to fulfill their potential. They have the creativity and passion, but often get lost, not knowing how to direct their energies. Now, popular life coach Martha Beck shows how readers can find their calling in service and healing - while realizing their destiny.
With a sparkling, compassionate, and often irreverent style, Beck draws from a combination of ancient wisdom and modern science to help readers consciously embrace vital skills that may be embedded in our DNA and are now made accessible again. Beck shows how to put together an “inner team” and an external “tribe” of people with the same aims and outlines four simple Steps for Transformation: Wordlessness, Oneness, Imagination, and Creation. With step-by-step instructions and guided reflections, Martha shows readers how to drop into the wordless state of communion with nature and self, how to connect with the oneness between self and the universe, how to be empowered by the spark of inspiration, and finally, how to take action and realize their creative potential to make a lasting impact in their own lives and the world around them.
Heartfelt, inspirational, and filled with “a-ha” moments, Finding Your Way in a Wild New World provides the map for the unconventional life path that leads to miraculous change.

The Rhino!
What about Heather Henderson’s performance did you like?
She was very detailed about different characters. Her voice is easy to listen to and keep you entertained.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Taking the time to stay quiet and connect with something greater than yourself, the universe. Learning to recognize everything and everybody are connected.

Delightful and fun learning experience
If you could sum up Finding Your Way in a Wild New World in three words, what would they be?
Joyful Mind Teachings
Who was your favorite character and why?
Well, obviously the author since she is sharing her thoughts and experiences.
Have you listened to any of Heather Henderson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No - and this was a lot of fun to listen to. The various accents she used as part of the narrative were done well (at least they fit their stereotypes) and the delivery was good for the funny parts, with good comedic timing. There were some smile inducing sections, and a couple of laughs.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I read a lot about spirituality, personal growth, entrepreneurship, neuropsychology, and animal science. Yet this has to be one of the most inspirational calls to action I have listened to, despite the oftentimes corny narrator and lengthy bush stories. Martha Beck is full of contagious, joyful energy and a great combination of soulful believer and thoughtful academic.

This was told by the author. Not really a character book.
