An Astra Militarum Novel

A young soldier of the Astra Militarum is thrust onto a battlefield where the average life expectancy is just fifteen hours – facing brutal orks, artillery bombardment, and the horrors of no man's land.

Listen to it because

It's a sharp, incisive look at the first hours of war for a new Guardsman, and all the terrors that accompany it…

The story

Arvin Larn is terrified. On the battlefields of the far future, only an insane man wouldn't be. Seventeen years old and still new to the Imperial Guard, he is thrust straight into his first war, and must face horrors that his sheltered upbringing could never prepare him for. The trenches of the 41st millennium are filled with worse things than rats and trenchrot. For one, the world they fight for is being contested by the monstrous alien orks. The greenskins live for battle and fight without fear, so it's no wonder that the average life-span of an Imperial Guardsman on this forsaken world is only fifteen hours.

I really loved the hour to hour life of a guardsman this book provides. My only complaint is just as I got properly interested ans invested the book ended. It's a slow start with a strong finish. Check it out!

Loved the story and the characters and I especially liked how the narrator did voices for each character

Loved it

Great cast of characters and intimate story with great comedic edge and surprisingly deep and heartfelt character development. Performed expertly, but be prepared for some gut punches

A Catch-22 Style Story In The Far, Far Future

I enjoyed the characters and story. The narrator left a little to be desired but not awful.

Great listen.

great story!

The narrative puts the listener in the shoes of a novice guardsman, and their first 15 hours on an incredibly hostile planet overrun by bloodthirsty Xenos.

A harrowing tale that highlights the relentless horror of life in the Imperial Guard

I cried at the ending(Why bro he even thought he was going to live and the group was funny)

This is by far my favorite 40K novel. It shows the life of a guardsman living in this grim dark universe. i love that the author and the narrator gives each character a distinct personality. it really drives home to be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the plot armor of the space marine for the guardsman stand the line, and they die fighting. It is what they do best. they die standing.

If Full Metal Jacket was a 40k novel

I love the orks and try to read and or listen to any books containing them I decided to give this a shot even though the orks aren't the main focus I was happy to have them involved and I'm glad I gave this a chance as I went through Arvin Larns story has to be one of my new favorites

Great story

I’m just now starting into the world of Warhammer and this seems an excellent entry point. To understand such a big world, I wanted to start by learning about things at a human scale and this fits exactly, no space marines or giant war machines, just men in trenches doing their best.

It’s also all made better by Tom Allenby’s narration. He’s got great range and most of the characters have their own distinct voice!

A great start into the Imperial Guard!
