Publisher's summary

Megan Phenix - bar and grill owner in gay-friendly Eureka Springs - is labeled as "playing hard to get" and finds herself the object of much unwanted attention. If only she were seeing someone...maybe the women would leave her in peace.

Leah Rollins thinks 50 is too young to retire, so instead she opens a store in the touristy shopping district of Eureka Springs, next to the popular Phenix Grill. She soon learns that Megan Phenix is a bit on the grumpy side as they spar over parking spaces and anything else they can find to argue about. When Leah catches the attention of the multitude of single lesbians in town, she searches for a way out. Could the grumpy grill owner next door be the answer to her problems?

Megan and Leah strike an unlikely alliance and conspire to rid themselves of the unwanted attention by fake dating. Can they pull it off?

As they pretend to date and convince everyone in town that they really are a couple, the pretense becomes harder to hold on to. But there's just one problem...they don't really like each other.

Or do they?

uncomfortable, shocking, disappointing

Nicole Z. awesome narration as always. That's the last good thing I have to say about this book. there was a quirky sweet little love story but I had trouble getting past the premise for the two women getting together. I don't see anything funny about sexual assault and cyberbullying. It's assault if the woman is too drunk to say yes. And who's sister would leave her there? And not feel sorry later? Imagine the destruction if the bully had been a man or these women were 20 years younger. Shameful message that it's all in good fun and be a good sport. That's BS. I wanted to put down the book but I hung on hoping for justice. You don't have to look at the news very long to see that this scenario is not funny. Hard to believe this is the same woman who wrote Pelican's Landing.

Some Things Aren't Funny

Though I've enjoyed most of Gerri Hill's works that are available on Audible I've had problems with certain depictions of behaviors by the author. More than once I've found the conduct on the part of some characters that were accepted or glossed over to be less than okay. In this case the author has outdone herself.
Sexual harassment is not funny or entertaining. Neither is taking nude photo's of someone without their permission and using said photo's in attempt to blackmail the individual photographed is not funny or entertaining. Then there is the seeming active cooperation of the victim's sister in her further victimization is sad. The fact that no one finds these actions to be totally unacceptable is either unrealistic or extremely lacking in familial loyalty.
I checked the copyright date thinking that perhaps the book was written in the 1990's, I was shocked to see that the date was 2016. The idea that a woman would put forth a book minimizing such odious conduct is disturbing. I can't believe any woman would accept it so cavalierly if the writer or the offender depicted were male.
Even without the egregious conduct of Mary Beth the book is short on plot, pacing, and character development; disappointed doesn't begin to describe my opinion of this book.. .

Mixed feelings.

Any additional comments?

I love Gerri Hill's books. I love Nicol Zanzarella's narrations. That being said, I almost didn't finish listening to this book. I do not agree that harassing someone on social media is "just for fun." I was shocked when Megan's sister and friends did not stand up for her. Bullying is not acceptable. I couldn't get past this aspect of the book.

Can't like this story.

Gerri Hill is a solid writer whose books I've consistently enjoyed - until this one. The plot of this story is driven by the premise that a woman is being blackmailed by a stalker who is posting revealing photos of her on facebook. I understand the story is supposed to be upbeat and funny, but I can't get around the blatant cruelty of the act. What's more, the woman's weak and ineffectual responses to this humiliation are frustrating and baffling. The victim's sister keeps telling her this degradation is all in fun and it shouldn't be taken seriously. The sister won't even ask the stalker, her friend, to stop. Some sister.

The romantic relationship is handled well and is easily the highlight of this otherwise off-putting tale.

Nicol Zanzarella does a fine job of narrating the story, but couldn't rescue it for me.

I'll admit I couldn't finish this one. Things may all come out right in the end, but I can't like this story.

So disappointed and a little angry

So disappointed to read a book where a group of women, especially at their ages, think it's ok to take nude photos of a passed out friend... and then tell her it was her own fault for getting drunk. I'm all for teasing a friend, and giving each other a hard time for silly mistakes, but this crosses too many lines.

The sister must die!!

Almost all the characters, with the exception of the two leads, are reprehensible. They all continue to laugh off and make a joke of what is at least a misdemeanor and highly likely a felony committed against one the lead characters and one of them is her sister. kill them all and start over.

Disappointed

I think all but one of Gerri ‘s books has unfinished storylines. I think it is because, like most lesbian novels focus too much on the sex and not enough on the storyline. It’s most noticeable in this book. The concept is great and the beginning and middle are intriguing but the ending falls short like all her books

I love Gerri Hill Books

But by far this is my favorite book and Nicol Zanzarella does this book justice. It doesn't matter if I'm driving to work (essential employee) or on lunch I love listening to the audible Version and of course I have added this book to my Library!
