Publisher's Summary

Misery Chastain was dead. Paul Sheldon had just killed her - with relief, with joy. Misery had made him rich; she was the heroine of a string of best sellers. And now he wanted to get on to some real writing.

That's when the car accident happened, and he woke up in pain in a strange bed. But it wasn't the hospital.

Annie Wilkes had pulled him from the wreck, brought him to her remote mountain home, splinted and set his mangled legs. The good news was that Annie was a nurse and had painkilling drugs. The bad news was that she was Paul's Number One Fan. And when she found out what Paul had done to Misery, she didn't like it. She didn't like it at all. And now he had to bring Misery back to life. Or else....

    "Creepy, atmospheric, chilling, awesome."

I've been listening to this audiobook on cassette for a VERY long time. It's my favourite. The writing is simply excellent. Lindsay Crouse is FANTASTIC as the narrator, really bringing to life Annie's psychosis, while giving Paul a meek yet determined voice. I cannot recommend this book enough, to classic King fans, book fans, horror fans, psychological drama fans etc. Finally having this digitally is a total blessing as my cassette is more than worn out after all these years.

    Final though - GET IT.

    "favourite author with excellent narration"

a great King story, (so much better than the film), with excellent gripping narration, i usually take a while to adjust to the narrators style but this was so natural and a perfect fit to the story that it took no adjustment at all- one of the best so far. Character voices were consistent, great sound quality, and there were no obvious breaks and no speech quirks to notice. sometimes, in other stories, i got the impression the narrator had been in a different mood on different days of recording, but here the reading was as though it had been done all in one. I usually prefer longer stories, so this ended sooner than i would have liked, but thats because I miss the characters when the book ends- the length suits the story perfectly. Highly recommended.

    "Scary !!! and Wonderful"

A brilliantly scary story, wonderfully read by Lindsay Crouse, which using interesting themes and metaphors demonstrates a master class in writing. (Such as the tides being compared to pain)! Demonstrating Stephen Kings excellent style. There are shocking screens which make me want to see the movie and a story within the story of “misery returns”. Moreover, it really keeps the listener captivate even when our hero finally thinks he’s free.

One warning! Don’t read this if you are recovering from an illness in bed!

"One of the best Stephen King audiobooks"

Lindsay Crouse is as excellent as Grover Gardener or Ron McLarty at capturing the tone and terror of Stephen King. Her performances as Paul Sheldon and Annie Wilkes are powerful and distinct. She makes Annie as loathsome and terrifying as Kathy Bates did in 1990.

    "One of my favourites"

This was a really good listen. Adds another dimension to the whole Misery experience, as you cannot gloss over or skim the gruesome bits....as you can when reading. As always, with Stephen King, the characters are so brilliantly and believably painted.
After initial reservations about the narrator....I thought she was a little deadpan in her delivery.....this style in fact became very effective. She did a great job building up the tension.
An excellent listen. I have the written book, the film and have seen an adaptation in the theatre...hope I'm not a number one fan ☺

    "Gripping and horrific."

I had saw the movie before like so many. The book is not
Only faithful but to a Big degree better. More emotional and deeper than the movie was. I very much recommend this book to thriller lovers and King lovers alike. Even if you've saw the movie first. Like me. Trust me ! Read it ❤️

    "Simply brilliant listen"

This audio book makes the film look like a Disney movie! It's so much darker, scarier and brutal. A real horror classic.

    "What a gripper"

I read this book and watched the film 🎥 years ago, probably 20 plus and as I listened I could see parts of the film. I am always wary of American narrators but God is this lady good. A nice subtle accent and read beautifully, with feeling, aggression and softness just right every time. I had forgotten how good this book is. There were moments when I abruptly shut my IPAD as I was so tense and had to stop, only to resume within 5 minutes as I was so gripped. I would highly recommend this to any King fan and in fact ANY book lover. 5 stars and more 👍🏿🙀

    "really, very good."

Another brilliantly delivered book by Steven King, gripping and tense!
thought the Audio performance could have been better though, pretty dull with a monotoned voice.

I read this book years ago and had it back on my mind, so I got this audiobooks. It's a Stephen King classic, which Lindsay Crouse really brought to life in her rendition.
