Story
As anarchy and civil war took grip across the globe, Britain was quarantined. The press was nationalized, and martial law, curfews, and rationing were implemented. It wasn't enough. An evacuation was planned. The inland towns and cities of the United Kingdom were to be evacuated to defensive enclaves being built around the coast and the Scottish Highlands and in the Irish Republic. For George Tull and the other residents of the Waverly-Price Retirement Home, walking to the coast is not an option.

Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

As the first waves of injured bystanders, guardsmen, and rioters arrived at hospitals, it became apparent that a deadly new disease had been unleashed on the population. Whether the virus was naturally occurring or an escaped lab experiment, Cade hadn't a clue and wasn't especially concerned until he learned of its unprecedented virulence, unusual method of transference, and the fact that, according to the news, it brought the newly dead back to life, semi-mindless, and with an insatiable desire to feed on the flesh of the living.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Publisher's summary
Nations collapsed. The undead rose. Some people survived.
Three months after escaping from London, Bill discovers the true extent of the global war that followed the outbreak. Most of the world has been destroyed, but though ruined farmland and abandoned cities are filled with zombies, there are other survivors and there is a safe haven - so he is told - in a small village on the Irish coast.
Before he can go there, he must find and rescue the children. Then he'll have to battle his way through the infected wastelands of England and Wales in hopes that there really is a boat waiting for them. Even then, his journey won't be over.
When he's told of the sanctuary awaiting them, he also discovers that the scientist who created the virus escaped from New York. In order for any of them to ever truly be safe, Bill will have to head north to confront the man, discover the truth behind the outbreak, and finally choose between his old family and his new one.

Does the story end?
Any additional comments?
Just with the first 2 books, I sped through this one. I can't give it high enough reviews. The story was great and narration was perfect. But with how it ended, it makes you think the story line for these characters is over. There is a book 4, but it starts at the beginning of the series and tells a different character's story. I have spoken with Mr. Tayell, via social media, and I'm pretty sure he hinted that Bill will be back in book 8! Knowing that my beloved characters will be back, I'm definitely going to continue with the series. Now, I just have to wait for the remaining books to be made into audiobooks.

Book 4 a series I still adore
Following the gripping first 3 books series (plus the side book) that I read fast, I was looking forward to book 4. Although still mostly a good book, I found myself drifting at times, it didn't have quite the edge the 3 others had, but towards the end of the book it picked up again to something more exciting . I will still recommend this book as there are plenty more books in the series to go and the overarching story and characters still has me hooked.
Tim Bruce again great performance and kept in character for the audible read.

More pesky zombies
Frank Tayell's "Evacuation" series seems to be as good as modern apocalyptic fiction gets. It deals with real, ordinary folk in extraordinary situations. The story and the characterisation in the first three books that I've read are reasonably convincing, although I rather suspect that the harsh, unpredictable brutality of The Walking Dead is more realistic. Difficult to tell, though, isn't it? Until the zombies start marching down the High Street. Tayell's world-view allows room for at least limited optimism.
Family has a much larger cast of characters than the previous two books, and this creates more of a challenge for narrator Tim Bruce. He rises to it pretty well, though, keeping all the main voices distinct, and having a good stab at a range of different regional accents.
I'm not sure how convinced I was by the character of the arch-villain in this book -- the character is so outrageous that comes across like a comic bad guy in the early James Bond movies. You can almost imagine him having a bodyguard that uses a steel-lined hat as a weapon.
For all its faults, this series of books remains head-and-shoulders above almost everything else in this genre.

Great detail that makes sense of outbreak
If you could sum up Family in three words, what would they be?
Thrilling detailed characterful
Who was your favorite character and why?
I probably warmed to Kim the most as she is a woman of a certain age who despite a dreadful past still fights for her life and those around her. She is the mother figure at its best. Willing to do nything to save the children and delegates tasks easily.
Any additional comments?
Another great book in the series. Nice to have an apocalyptic zombie drama set in familiar locations (in the uk) that have clearly been well researched. The plot development is good and seems like it is really going somewhere but relishing good character development on the way.

With Answers Come More Questions - Gripping!
Where does Family rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is one of my top reads and cannot tell you how nice it is to have a realistic character in a zombie apocalypse plus it's based in the UK.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Family?
The best part of this is the answering of many of the stories questions so far and then the fact these answers bring on more questions!
Have you listened to any of Tim Bruce’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I do enjoy his narrating and the other books in the series have been narrated by him and these are just as good!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes! It is hard to put down!
Any additional comments?
I reached out to the author and he was so kind to reply and have chatted a few times since. I have paid for these books (although he sent me a code for the novella Zombies vs The Living Dead) but the fact he took the time to answer my questions about the story and engages with fans of the book also makes the whole experience 5*

The book that began the series that became the legend.... Now a major television series. Somewhere out there Ellie and her friends are hiding. They're shocked, they're frightened, they're alone. Their world has changed with the speed of a slamming door. They've got no weapons - except courage. They've got no help - except themselves. They've got nothing - except friendship. How strong can you be when the world is full of people trying to kill you?

Zombies are real. And we made them. Are you prepared for the zombie apocalypse? The Smith family is, with the help of a few marines. When an airborne "zombie" plague is released, bringing civilization to a grinding halt, the Smith family, Steven, Stacey, Sophia, and Faith, take to the Atlantic to avoid the chaos. The plan is to find a safe haven from the anarchy of infected humanity. What they discover, instead, is a sea composed of the tears of survivors and a passion for bringing hope.
