Publisher's Summary

Nineteen years ago, on the island kingdom of Garlin, a girl was born. With charred skin as rough as rock, Vala was instantly feared. For how could one be scorched by magic when it had perished ages before?

Recognizing an asset, the royal family welcomed her on their Guard. Her detail: the prince.
To watch. To protect. She has grown with him, lives her life for him.

When the high kingdom’s princess comes to assess the prince, assassins of rival courtiers come to claim his life. One nearly succeeds in his mission. But with shadowy movements and charred skin like her own, Vala knows he is not like the rest.

As threats to the prince continue and questions about Vala’s life begin to rise, she faces a fear worse than fire or water, worse even than losing him.

She fears finding out who she truly is.

Captivating narration for a wondrous story

I had been wanting to read this book for a while but I never found the time to get invested like the story deserves. Thankfully I have a job that affords me 6/7 hours a day to myself driving around, so I was happy when the audiobook became available.

The story of Vala, an orphaned girl raised in a chateau with a prince she protects due to her unusual skin affliction, grabbed my attention with the first pages read. This narrator did a great job of emoting everything the characters were feeling throughout. The action and mysterious circumstances that will change Vala's life forever start happening pretty fast once you get into the world building.

There's a mixture of rich characters you grow to love... and hate. New revelations are revealed to her and a new love interst as well. Which sort of broke my heart at first but I was happy the way things worked out. There was never a dull moment from one moment to the next. I love how the book ended on such a dreamy moment of hope and promise for Vala leading into her next adventure!

Holy moly wow... what a great story!

This is my first book from author JM Miller, and I was seriously impressed. I received an Audible book to review, and I can't tell you just how impressed I was with this story!

I was able to listen to this book while I was driving out of town so I had plenty of opportunity to listen nonstop. This story just covers so many bases. The main character is different from everybody else in her land because when she was born she was "cursed" by fire and has rough dark skin that only comes off in water and touching her will burn anyone else. She has been friends with the prince, Caulden, since they were kids and now is how lead guard.

After a horrible incident during Princes Night where Caulden was nearly killed, she gets into trouble with the queen for entering the sacred place where she's been told she's not allowed to go. Even if she saved hee son's life. She gets demoted to a lesser guard on his security team, but she keeps thinking about the man she saw in the water that looked just like her.

The queen and princess from another larger country are visiting in order to see if the prince will be a good match for the princes... and thus starts the intrigue, action, and betrayal.

This audiobook was so amazing and the narrator did an absolutely fabulous job keeping me focused on the book.

I just started book 2, and I already know it's going to be just as great!!

I recieved an ALC for my honest review.

A flammable read!

Nineteen years ago, on the island kingdom of Garlin, a girl was born...
With charred skin as rough as rock, she was instantly feared...
For how could one be scorched by magic when it had perished ages before?

From start to finish, I was highly invested and interested with such an intriguing and magical read. I have truly fallen for this series and I am glad I have the next book to listen too. I look forward to listening to it.

The heroine was everything - I loved her voice, her inner strength and capabilities. Our heroine is simply the best. Very well written and descriptive, imaginative read.

Full of magic, royalty, assassins, threats, fears, mystery and a hint of romance.

Perfect for readers of fantasy romances.

The narration was splendid. It added to the novel and brings our heroine to life. Very happy with that!

Very invested

The opening scene in FALLEN FLAME hooked me immediately. I became instantly invested, and as the story went on, I truly grew to care about several of the characters and the mystery surrounding them. The writing is beautiful and descriptive, everything I could want from a fantasy while keeping things fast-paced. The narrator (Amelia Hugh) did an incredible job as well, and her voice paired with J.M. Miller’s writing is a match made in heaven.

Great

The thing I enjoyed most about listening to the story was that the plot twists actually kept me guessing! I enjoyed the curiosity I felt as the story was told and unfolded. I loved our main heroine, And how the author illuminated her strengths, despite the fact that she was different. It made her very relatable, and I think most people would feel the same. The writing was well done and there was no time wasted. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

It’s a slow start but leaves you wanting more

This book started off a bit slow for me. That may have to do with all the characters building, but by the end of book one, I couldn’t wait to start book two. Amelia does a great job narrating!

A unique YA series

I loved this book ! And can’t wait to read on in the series! while I knew from the synopsis that I might enjoy Series since it seem like it would slot in perfectly with my interests. I was honestly blown away ! I loved the world building and characters.

The characters were unique and multifaceted . Which leaves you wanting to know more . While picturesque language allows you to become full immersed in the story. Honestly I can’t wait to see where book two takes me.

Fallen Flame

Imagine being different from everyone around you. You don’t just feel different, you are different. Life is hard for Valla being the only one with the burnt skin. Not scarred, but charred. She is fire, and she don’t know why. Then enter a mysterious stranger. He seems like an enemy at first, but the more Valla gets to know him, the more he seems to be an ally. When her life gets flipped upside down, can he help her escape the mess?
I really like Valla’s story. I can tell that it will be fun, and complicated and messy, but well worth my time. I give Fallen Flame 4 stars and I look forward to finding out what happens next!

Vala: a total mystery

Vala was from the Kindgom of Garlin. She is feared for her rough appearance and touching her can cause harm. Her mission is to guard the Prince, but after some incidents she loses the Captain’s trust. Now she is faced with unveiled secrets and treason. Great listen and a an on point narration.
