Publisher's Summary

With news of Horus' treachery spreading across the galaxy, the Great Crusade grinds to a halt as the primarchs and their Legions decide where their loyalty lies - with the Emperor or with the rebel Warmaster.

The Dark Angels, too, face a time of testing, both among the stars and on their home world, Caliban. Luther, once Lion El'Jonson's trusted second-in-command, now languishes as an exile in all but name while his master struggles to thwart the traitors' advance upon the forge world Diamat. But an ancient evil gathers its strength beneath the surface of Caliban, and the First Legion will soon be thrust into a deadly conflict where all that they know will be cast into doubt.

A lot better than I had expected.

So, before I started reading this one, I had heard a lot of people saying it was one of the weaker horus heresy books, and so I went in with it with some strong reservations... I have to say though, it really was not one of the weaker ones.
There are multiple parts in the book that are completely fresh, ideas and themes and action that had previously not been seen in the heresy, and quite simply, I really enjoyed it.

Underdog of a Heresy novel.

Full disclosure: Dark Angels are my legion. However this is the novel that begins the fall of an incredible fogure and I feel it's just incredibly well done. While could be overlooked in the scheme of the greater "Heresy". I say you shouldn't

Mike Lee is in my opinion underrated among the likes of Abnett and Dembski Bowden and I'm just going to say it: He cuts straight through the perspective fluff of the obnoxious remembrancers and gives me exactly what I want, space marine focus narrative. Don't like them, never did. This is exactly what I want from a heresy novel and is told mainly from the perspectives of exiled Librarian Zahariel in Caliban and Chaplain Nemiel embarking on a trademark Dark Angel's special operation to undermine the Horus heresy.

Things go all wrong on Caliban when a hidden rebellion that had been festering underneath the surface begins to emerge to the fore and certain players seem to have turned all to blind an eye.

Its good

This was a better Dark Angels book than the Decent of Angels. Unfortunately it leaves you hanging but in a good spot to help build suspense.

More Primarch Stories neede

Another good Dark Angel HH novel. Half the book about Lion El Johnson and half about Luther.

Needs more Horus in these novels but still good.

jarring changes in character voices.

the 1st legion story arc is shaping up to be one of my favourites
this narrator though.
I just cant get in to the dialogue flows, trans-human super soldiers, of which all of his voices are distinctly deeper and rougher than humans.
except the 2 main protagonists, who sound like prebubescent lads whose voices will never break.
irritating to say the least.
I'm on the verge of just buying any further books in the series, that he narrates, in physical copy, so I can just read and not have to listen to this performance again.

Protagonist Voice

This was a great book, and I love Gareth Armstrong so don’t get me wrong… BUT, Nemiel and Zahariel are adults now!
I understand wanting to maintain consistency between books, but the voices they had at 17 aren’t going to be the voices they have as 70 year old astartes!
It would’ve been great to hear their voices mature a bit 🙏🏼

Well… I did not see that coming…

So much so I messed up a miniature!
Took a lil while to get in to this one. I’m not a dark angels fan. But good lords of terra, once the action started, it kicked off with gusto! And the twist at the end???? WOW…
Awesome story.

A must read for Dark Angels fans!

But read the preceding book first! That introduces the characters before this develops them.

A let down

I really wanted to like this Audiobook as much as I like the Dark Angels and their lore. However it is poorly written. Unlike many other novels in the HH series, this was boring and predictable. Time and again I found myself cursing in frustration over repeated poor dialogue and storyline. The narration didn't help either. Two of the main veteran space marines sounded like scared, timied little school boys always out of their depth. It could have been great... in the hands of another author and narrator. So disappointed.

don't understand the bad reviews

this book was great it tidyed up the first angles book and continued that part of the heresy. it's a book about loyalty and honour mostly. the internal struggle of the 1st.
Luther's betrayal. the turn of Caliban. and the lion and his cold secrets. well worth the read if you liked the first angels book.
the comments about the blood running cold is not so much fear, as the legions don't feel fear it's more about that sick feeling you get when you are internally conflicted.
you have to imagine their entire world and everything they believe in was never what they thought. it would send your blood cold

Story was reasonably interesting

Struggled to enjoy. Author made the Astartes sound like regular soldiers with their weakness. The amount of "chills went up/down characters spine" was ridiculous. Astartes don't feel fear let alone "Horror". Gareth's voice performance was not good. His voice acting of Nemiel was awful, I nearly couldn't finish the book. Compared to other books in the series, this isn't anywhere near my favourite

Cold Blooded

I lost count of the times a character’s blood “went cold”, or got a cold shiver down their spine.

Not bad overall, but could have been half the length.
