Publisher's summary

Brooks Johnson’s words to live by:

When returning to Licking Thicket, TN, for the first time in 10 years to reunite with your nosy neighbors, heartbroken ex-girlfriend, and matchmaking mama who never quite believed you were gay, it’s best to bring a fake boyfriend as backup.

Just don’t be surprised when your ex-girlfriend does the same. And when her incredibly hot fake boyfriend becomes the one island of calm in a sea of bovine-based insanity, it’s best to exercise caution, especially when he pushes you up against the rough barn wall to check you very thoroughly for splinters.

Just don’t be surprised if you fall head-over-hooves in love with him.

cute story, sweet guys!

a turn on an old premise. Mal and Brooks are both super sweet, making the story a joy to listen to. the Thickiteerians are a hoot. a great, light, listen full of fun. michael dean does a great job filling out their personalities.

push through the female friend. she DOES turn out okay, I promise (I got to not quite 2 hours in and almost gave up but pushed through).

Great story with all the feels!

Brooks’ and Mal’s story is wonderfully told by the authors and performed by the narrators. Their characters are authentic, while still being a lot of fun to get to know. Just the right amount of angst between the main characters. The rest of the players in the story make it a very fun and fast-paced listen. Great narration and loved this title so much. Sad when it came to an end.

Overall an OK book

For full disclosure, I read other’s reviews before I purchased this and agree with some and disagree with others and I am from Tennessee. My initial thought was to give this book a 2 or 3 star rating, but I figured that wouldn’t be fair because typical audience is probably not southern and wouldn’t catch typical southern nuance that is completely missing. As far as narration, I’ve become completely spoiled by the likes of Sean Crisden, Alexander Sendece (hope spelling is correct), Iggy Toma, and Shannon Gunn. Every narrator (voice actor, actor, performer… is there a consensus on how to refer to them?) has a few mistakes and I always wonder if it’s a typo on the page but they have to stay true to what’s written or mispronounced. In this situation, the story would have hugely benefited from a southern narrator. As someone visually impaired, I won’t complain about it. Glad the book was available as an audio book. And if you listen to copyright info, most things in this genre are self published so the author is having to fund the audio version making me add two stars. If I haven’t lost you already in this review my biggest complaint is the you can sacrifice for me but I should sacrifice for you and both people fearing resentment. This weekend I listened to 2 books like that and it’s annoying that something that would be a 5 minute conversation turns into chapters if 13 year old angst. That age group isn’t supposed to buy these titles. I’ll continue with the series. Hope I made it clear I did not get a free copy of the audible and I did pay for my own copy.

Simply Love a romance in a small town

The voice of the narrator was majic with each reading. Hope to hear that strong sexual stimulating voice in future books.
The union between boys whom left a community to find themselves was a chance to return home.
Definitely will have another listen.
The author's made my weekend a time to remove myself from loss of my mother and many to covid-19 a needed distraction.
Can't wait to hear the next read.

DELIGHTFULLY SEXY & FUNNY!!!

With a supporting cast of numerous inmates, I found myself lost in an excellent story, laughing heartier than the previous chapter. There were plots & sub-plots, generously peppered with double entendres, bovine references, southern humor, and a delicious love story which unfolds beautifully..., in spite of all their shared nuttiness.

Michael Dean's talented vocal skills kept the fun clearly labelled; each character was unique and personable, and the intimacy so very attractive as the love grew right along with them. This review is done after my second trip to Licking Thicket, Tenn. Yummy!!!

Simply fantastic

Well both Lucy & May have donevit again. These two ladies have written the cutest romance. Complete with a southern setting that sounded almost like my home town. Mel and Brooks will steal your heart along with the rest of the wonderfully zany cast of characters. So if your a big fan of MM romance then you just have to add this book yo your collection.

🎧 Narrator comment: I enjoy Michael Dean as a narrator, he suits the characters, has good cadence, inflections and intonations and it's easy to distinguish the characters from each other. Overall an enjoyable performance and he bought the story to life.
