Story
Since time immemorial, humans have worshipped the gods they call Fhrey, truly a race apart: invincible in battle, masters of magic, and seemingly immortal. But when a god falls to a human blade, the balance of power between humans and those they thought were gods changes forever. Now only a few stand between humankind and annihilation: Raithe, reluctant to embrace his destiny as the God Killer. Suri, a young seer burdened by signs of impending doom. And Persephone, who must overcome personal tragedy to lead her people.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Publisher's Summary
WHO WILL HAVE THE LAST LAUGH?
Stop me if you’ve heard this one. A thief, a candlemaker, an ex-mercenary, and a pig farmer walk into a trap…and what happens to them is no joke. When Riyria is hired to retrieve a jester’s treasure, Royce and Hadrian must match wits with a dwarf who proves to be anything but a fool. Difficult choices will need to be made, and in the end those who laugh last do so because they are the only ones to survive.
This is a standalone short story of 7,200 words. No prior knowledge of The Riyria Revelations or The Riyria Chronicles is required to enjoy it to its fullest, making this a perfect introduction for new readers or a chance for Riyria veterans to spend a little more time with old friends. The Jester is a story of adventure, bonds of friendship, and a recognition that the choices we make dictates the future we find.

Great short
I mainly got this short story as a time filler between books. It was free and the narrator is one of the best! This was a great short and works well as a stand alone story but I'm sure I would enjoy it more if I listened to the whole series and knew a bit more about the characters.

Perfect for Anyone Who Hasn't Read Riyria!
This short story is perfect for anyone who hasn't read Michael Sullivan's Riyria novels. It showcases the two characters, Hadrian and Royce, who are beloved by Sullivan's fans. They interact, jest with each other, and work through a puzzle all while in a very precarious predicament - something they always find themselves in!
The one hour story also showcases the skill of Tim Gerard Reynolds in voicing the unique styles, character, and interaction of the pair. Listening to Mr. Reynolds is a pure joy on any quiet afternoon or drive to work. My bet is almost any fantasy fan will jump into the many books of Hadrian and Royce after enjoying The Jester!

Short, Fast Paced, Interesting, w/a Twist!!
What more can you ask from a short story than to contain a Fast Paced, Interesting Plot that holds Your attention during Your Wild White Water Canyon Ride?, add a Twist onto the End, and well, You’ve covered not only the standard requirements for a Good & Enjoyable Story, BUT, also, for a GREAT & MEMORABLE LISTEN if it’s an Audio Book.
And THAT Dear Reader, is what I found within the sounds, sights, and personalities within “The Jester”..,
I would definitely RECOMMEND this ‘Read’! While it may be short, I believe that You’ll Enjoy the Ride. It’s sort of like one of those very short rollercoasters at an Amusement Park, full of darkness, odd smells, and Your senses unable to pick out or up on all the sharp details that surround You as You travel pellmell through the obscured darkness, unsure where You’re journey will eventually take You or You’ll end up; BUT, once those last doors fly open, and You’re unceremoniously dumped back out into the full light of day, You’re left saying to yourself....
Well, Hell’s Bells, that was kind of Fun!, I think I want to Go Again! ...so, If You’ve read this review this far, then stop hesitating, go on and select, “The Jester”, and ENJOY YOUR RIDE!!

Where does FREE: The Jester (A Riyria Chronicles Tale) rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This was a short, free book that accompanied me on a jog. I had no previous knowledge of the world or background story of the characters, but it was still so very enjoyable.
It certainly made me eager to try more books from the author. And kudos to the narrator, he makes great voices!

An amusing affair in a D&D style
If you could sum up FREE: The Jester (A Riyria Chronicles Tale) in three words, what would they be?
Dungeon
Treasure
Fools
What did you like best about this story?
The characters are unique (although perhaps stereotypical ~ but that in itself was quite amusing). A fighter, a thief, a candlestick maker and a pig farmer!
What does Tim Gerard Reynolds bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Expression of voice, accents.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Made me laugh and made me eager from suspense.
Any additional comments?
Really enjoyed this short story. Would recommend. Will probably look into the series.

Entertaining
Where does FREE: The Jester (A Riyria Chronicles Tale) rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I enjoyed this short story so much that I have ordered the first book in the series. Very entertaining, and manged to delineate the characters and back story in a short space of time, often by what was not said.
What was one of the most memorable moments of FREE: The Jester (A Riyria Chronicles Tale)?
Stuck in the sealed room discussing the murder of the old man to get the pieces of the treasure map.
Have you listened to any of Tim Gerard Reynolds’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Not listened to any others
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The ending. Though I thought the greatest treasure might be life.
Any additional comments?
Excellent entertainment, and a slightly different take on the sword and sorcery genre.

What would have made FREE: The Jester (A Riyria Chronicles Tale) better?
Okay for a freebie, but I wouldn't have paid for it.
Narration was poor, and the story could have been SO much better...
How could the performance have been better?
It was simply poor across the board.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from FREE: The Jester (A Riyria Chronicles Tale)?
Sorry, but I'd have to re-write it. Just didn't enjoy it at all.

fun short story
a fun short story. I didnt like how they argued and wasted time in the cave for so long while it filled with water. I think any one else in that scenario would make a choice quickly! other than that, it was an enjoyable listen.
