Dennis Seider
When I was an undergraduate student at UCLA, I had an English teacher, a Mr. Cordero, who was absolutely brilliant. I would often follow him around picking up his conversational crumbs like a hungry sparrow. He, of course, basked in the adoration until, one day, his sense of responsibility must have overcome his amusement, and he confided in me that he really wasn’t as brilliant as I suspected but only more experienced.
Of course, I assumed it was mere modesty; after all, what can a student teetering on the threshold of life say about experience. Looking back years later, I see now that he was right, at least about the difference that comes only with experience. This is a story about the lessons of experience - in other words, by stepping in it!
