Highly Recommended

This highly academic yet highly readable classic is indispensable for an understanding of history, starting with the Greek myth of Europa, a thorough but entertaining dissertation on the origins of modern Europe, and the features of modern Europe. No war or effort at peace is left examined. I cannot recommend this highly enough, it is indispensable.

This encompasses the latest in both archaeological and DNA research and thus is far more valuable than longer but outdated histories. His judgement is impeccable with a gift for the worthwhile fact.

Enjoyable overview

I especially enjoyed learning about the prehistoric times and early civilizations. Of course in a short book, it is hard to go into detail.

Good Overview

This is a well known modern overview of European history, notable for several reasons. One is that it covers (almost) equally all parts of Europe, East as well as West etc.

Good Work

I bought this book because I recently visited Europe and realized that my knowledge of certain areas of Europe was very limited. This book is impressive in it span of history and regions. A must have for any lover of European history.

Well Done

Excellent introduction two two millennia of history in Europe. It can be a bit breathless at times - I covered the fall of the Roman Empire while waiting for my potatoes to boil - but that just leaves you hungry to dig a bit deeper.

Awesome

I got this book because I wanted to know how Europe go to be the way it is today. I knew bits and pieces of history, but it was only bits and pieces. This book tied all those bits and pieces together. On that count alone, I am highly satisfied with this work.

An amazing volume

An amazing volume of work has gone into this book and as a historical record it is quite remarkable for its geographical sweep and for the depth in which it explores every facet of European history.

Very Good Explained

Rambling, discursive, entertaining informative and highly individual. With particular reference to eastern Europe and Orthodoxy. Captivating History is a eastern European specialist and so balances up the usual highly Western European, Catholic/Protestant bias found in histories of this sort.
