This magnificent biography of Henry VIII is set against the cultural, social and political background of his court - the most spectacular court ever seen in England - and the splendour of his many sumptuous palaces.
An entertaining narrative packed with colourful description and a wealth of anecdotal evidence but also a comprehensive analytical study of the development of both monarch and court during a crucial period in English history.
As well as challenging some recent theories, it offers controversial new conclusions based on contemporary evidence that has until now been overlooked. This is a triumph of historical writing which will appeal equally to the general listener and the serious historian.

If you feel you are already very familiar with the life of Henry and the story of his wives this is a must. It gives a detailed glimpse into the life of his court and his private life. It’s a fascinating journey through his castles, his world and the people who surrounded him.
It’s one of those books that I wish would never end. And here it was brought to life by Phyllida Nash with her soothing voice and wonderful British accent.
Fantastic!

I went to England years ago and saw where King Henry's wives were beheaded. It left an impression. I also have family that cam to America via the Mayflower due to religious reasons. So this is a very interesting time to me. How did the religious state get so tense and who is this guy that would legally behead his wives?
A lot of history books can be skewed and the author, weather they realize it or not, is writing to prove a belief. I did not feel that in this book. I didn't see Henry in an all good or all bad light, it seemed matter of fact. I also like how the author took the time to set the scene and describe decorations at the time...from clothing to home decor. What was very interesting, the money spent at the time and how much that would cost today.
If social status weren't so important and religion, I don't think England would have the power or impact that it has had. What a different world we'd live in. Who knows, maybe we'd have more French, Spanish, or even Asian influences. How different America would be.
It held my interests!
