Publisher's Summary

America has fallen, and Ava's band of misfits is all that stands between freedom and absolute tyranny.

Political division in the US has reached the boiling point, and the second American Civil War is underfoot. Communist agitators have been successful in their efforts to intimidate voters from key states. The worst has happened. A far-left socialist candidate has stolen the reins of power, and his designs against the republic are absolute. With a sympathetic Congress, he will sign in sweeping bans on firearms, criminalize free speech, and institute a new government agency to root out dissenters.

Ava's group pledges to launch an insurgency campaign against the occupying force in Texas, but will have to watch out for those who have been tasked with purging the patriots.

A handful of freedom-loving governors and congressmen take a stand against the tyrannical administration by seceding from the Union. They represent an America that wishes to live in peace and live free. But that idea flies in the face of everything the dictatorial regime holds dear.

Ava's team cannot fail in its mission to liberate Texas. If Texas falls, America's demise is all but certain.

As with all audiobooks by Mark Goodwin, this audiobook contains no profanity and no embarrassing sex scenes. However, if you're offended by conservative principles and references to Scripture, this audiobook might not be for you.

I know it’s just a story but man it makes you think

Awesome book I am about half way through it my first day having it. I hope I do not get in trouble reading at work and my breaks going a little longer then they are supposed to. I really like how it connects with current situations and organizations, really makes you think where we might be heading. I know it’s just a story but man it makes you think.

Another stellar novel by Mark Goodwin

I'd love to see Stacey Glemboski narrate the whole Bible. Another great Goodwin novel though.

Great read

Great story, I like the fact that the characters weren't already professional preppers. The reader was excellent. This series was my first time listening to her and I am very pleased with her performance. Thanks for another great story.. Keep them coming :)

An Author who’s not scared!!!

Mark Goodwin is not afraid to mess with his characters!!! He writes in a way that you’re drawn to these characters but unlike other authors he’s not afraid to put a realistic spin on his characters future. People die. That’s apart of life and Mr Goodwin is able to keep you wanting more with his books by not being afraid to fully explore a character.

Evokes emotional responses

This second book in Ava’s Crucible series really evokes a lot of emotional responses. It’s a wild journey as we follow along with Ava and her team. They are stuck in a situation where they need to decide whether it’s worth their lives to fight in this brewing second civil war, because their lives may just be the cost. I love the Bible verses preceding the chapters that foreshadow its content or theme, as well as the way Mark Goodwin embeds the characters’ beliefs throughout the story. I can’t wait for the next book! Stacy Glembowski does a great job narrating this book. She seems like the perfect fit for Ava, and is able to give voice to the other characters as well. I really enjoyed listening to this book.

A really false idea of Christian ethics

This is a troubling book as it attempted to wrap a “Christian” theme around the central characters and failed. Quoting scriptures and making the characters “Christians” doesn’t alleviate the serious moral, ethical and spiritual dilemma a “real” Christian would face in going to war. Especially an insurgency. The anti-hero Ava went from dental hygienist to murderer in one paragraph without a hint of true remorse! I pushed through book 1 to book 2 but ... no more ...
