Story
As a part-time PI and full-time grim reaper, Charley Davidson has asked a lot of questions throughout her life: Why can I see dead people? Who is the hot supernatural entity following me? How do I get gum out of my sister's hair before she wakes up? But "how do I trap not one malevolent god but three?" was never among them. Until now. And since those gods are on earth to kill her daughter, she has little choice but to track them down, trap them, and cast them from this dimension. There's just one problem. One of the three stole her heart a very long time ago.

Charley Davidson, Grim Reaper extraordinaire, is pissed. She’s been kicked off the earthly plane for eternity - which is the appropriate amount of time to make a person stark-raving mad. But someone’s looking out for her, and she’s allowed to return after a mere hundred years in exile. Is it too much to hope for that not much has changed? Apparently it is. Bummer.

A smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper. Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light”. But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all.

Del Sol, New Mexico is known for three things: its fry-an-egg-on-the-cement summers, its strong cups of coffee - and, now, a nationwide manhunt? Del Sol native Sunshine Vicram has returned to town as the elected sheriff - thanks to her adorably meddlesome parents who nominated her - and she expects her biggest crime wave to involve an elderly flasher named Doug. Story
The job should have been easy. Get in. Assess the situation. Get out. But for veteran tracker Quentin Rutherford, things get sticky when the girl he’s loved since puberty shows up, conducting her own investigation into the strange occurrences of the small, New Mexico town. He knew it would be a risk coming back to the area, but he had no idea Amber Kowalski had become a bona fide PI, investigating things that go bump in the night.
By: Darynda Jones
Publisher's Summary
With 12 hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can't get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally, since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.
Charley's been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can't traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn't know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he's near, but naturally he swears he's fine. Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life.

Love This Series, except...
...except for the focus off Charley and Reyes and onto the daughter. Sorry, but it seems so many times in a series, when the lead characters give birth to a son or daughter, that the kid will be smarter, brighter, more good-looking and better than the older parents.
But how could anyone resist the wonderful narration by Lorelei King? She absolutely brings all these characters to life and enhances an already well-written series.

Another Fantastic addition to the series
Any additional comments?
Although this book did not contain a lot of action, much background info of Charlie and the other characters was revealed. I was getting frustrated that Charlie's character was not growing as the series (and her powers) progressed, but Eighth Grave answered a lot of questions. Can't wait to see what other surprises the author has for us.
Kudos to Lorelei King for yet another great reading. This series and Patricia Brigg's Mercy Thompson series are my favorite audiobooks. I listen to them over and over.

Wow, just wow! If you haven't read any books in this series, you'll want to start at the beginning, with First Grave on the Right. If you've been on the Charly journey, fasten your seatbelt, because $£*+ is going to hit the fan! It was a great ride, and an interview with Darynda Jones by Loralai King, and there are at least 3 more books planned at this point! So enjoy, I definitely did!

Crazy fun.
This story has grown leaps and bounds. I love it. It had me laughing, crying, overall enjoying it from start to finish. The whole gang is there and lots of mystery and mayhem is to be found with in these pages. As usual Charley is up to her smart ass ways that makes you love her even more. There are more twist to add along with all the dead. Defiantly a series that should be read in order, but if you do you won't regret it. And kudos to the narrator she is able to complement Charley with her voice and to bring out her character with such sassiness.

More insight and that is about it
Writing a review puts all in perspective for actually grading the book when there are mixed feelings. This one I have to grade the lowest in the series.
I was rather disappointed in our heroine who is losing some of her humanity and does not have much in the way of maternal feelings. You would think by now she would start acting a little “grown up”.
One the positive side, the Charley humor and quips are still there. We also get to find out about Mr. Wong, we are introduced to Lucifer himself, we get more insight into Cookie and her insecurities, we hear more background on Reyes & his adoptive parents and there is a cliffhanger ending BUT a WELL – PLEASE…

on the gravestone with this one
Any additional comments?
This book had the usual Charley Davidson humor but lacked the multiple, & I mean multiple, chaotic events that usually has Charley being pulled in different directions. This story showed more of the "nesting" side of Reyes instead of his typical bada$$ness. I was surprised at Charley's persistent recklessness when pregnant and shortly after giving birth. I expected her maternal protective instincts to be present, but they were lacking in crucial points. Bits of the story just did not fit as well together with the rest of the series and were a little hard to swallow...specifically about Charley's god position & memory loss. I still really like the series and plan to continue listening as new books come out.

Where does Eighth Grave After Dark rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of my higher rankings,I can't wait till the next book…. dang it:) Love this series. Really enjoyed the interview with the author at the end and I am slobbering for her new YA book she enticingly gave us the barest smudge of info about!!! At almost 37, I am not crazy about the YA scene but I really enjoyed "The Girl Next door trilogy!!!
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed Charlie of course and all the characters, They make me smile, laugh and cry.
What does Lorelei King bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Lorelei King is one of my favorite narraters, She and Luke Daniels have to be my favorites, I have listened to all the books they put out because they bring the characters to life. Its like watching a movie with my ears when she reads, You don't have to figure out who is talking because they have distinct voices!!!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The Well part made me laugh and cry, It also gave me the shivers when she kinda brought up a movie reference that totally frealed me out watching and I had forgotten about til then haha THANKS for reminding me so I have nightmares again.
Any additional comments?
Thank you Darynda Jones for taking your wonderful gift and sharing it with us!! You have such a awesome imagination, How lovely I get to share that with you and all your other readers!!! FINALLY, Mr Wong mystery revealed!
I'm so elated to discover who Mr Wong really is. I have to say, it was long overdue. No spoilers here though. You will love another great audiobook from Darynda Jones, narrated superbly by Lorelei King.
Charley is still sassy as ever and her untamed tongue continues to get her in trouble, but, her quick wit and unspeakable charm always wins. Reyes is still smoking hot (metaphorically and literally).
I would say it was more like a musical piece. It started off slow rising to its crescendo in the end. Lots of twists and turns throughout so it keeps you engaged.
Certainly worth purchasing or using a credit.

Unexpected Wow
Um, wow. Just… wow. I don’t think I’m sure how I feel about this book quite yet. There were some awesome things about it and some very surprising things about it. I think I’m still in shock just a bit. I don’t want to say too much about the book because I would never want to spoil the surprise for anyone else. But lemme just say I did NOT see any of that coming, not even a tiny little bit, and I’m not really sure where the next book is going to go. I’m so glad that Book 9 has already been announced or I might think this was the last book. It certainly reads like the end of a story arc, at least, but with several setups for the next one.
I’ve read many authors talk about “showing” rather than “telling.” Toward the end of the book, there is a big chunk of “telling.” A lot is revealed in a short amount of time, some of it heartbreaking, some of it really intriguing. But, again, NONE of it expected.
Loreli King, as always, does a fantastic job as Charley. She is such a perfect choice for narrator of this series.
I really want to say so much about this book, but I can’t possibly give it away. I would really encourage you NOT to read any other reviews about this book before you read it. Let yourself be surprised. But, after you’ve read it, email me and we’ll dish. ;)
