• NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED A NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST

A searing, exquisite new novel by the bestselling and award-winning author of Americanah and We Should All Be Feminists—the story of four women and their loves, longings, and desires

Chiamaka is a Nigerian travel writer living in America. Alone in the midst of the pandemic, she recalls her past lovers and grapples with her choices and regrets. Zikora, her best friend, has been successful at everything until—betrayed and brokenhearted—she must turn to the person she thought she needed least. Chiamaka’s bold, outspoken cousin Omelogor is a financial powerhouse in Nigeria who begins to question how well she knows herself. And Kadiatou, Chiamaka’s housekeeper, is proudly raising her daughter in America—but faces an unthinkable hardship that threatens all she has worked to achieve.

This is a beautifully rich novel, full of insight, emotion, and provocative observations about gender and cultural conflicts. It is definitely long, and those looking for a strong plot or easy elevator pitch story should look elsewhere. The women at the center of the novel are so distinct and specific as individuals, I found the book riveting on the level of character development. And the prose is gorgeous without being showy or self-conscious. Adichie pulled me into the world of these continent-hopping characters and made me care deeply. The ending is quite moving. For me, this is the author's best and most stunningly mature work. The narrators are all superb, none more so than Adichie herself.

A Magnificent Novel

In a world where we’ve been reduced to bare breasted, fufu swallowing and Afro beats dancing caricatures, Dream Count reflects our hearts, our hopes and our dreams. The multifaceted nature of the African woman and her diversity is captured beautifully always by Ngozi Adichie. She explores the complex finding of self that we all face in our lives trying to balance our Western exposure with African beliefs and our search for self worth and community and often love when living away from home in the United States. I related to almost every character and I wept knowing that I was seen. Just like Chiamaka, I felt so unseen and so misunderstood in all my complexities and differentnees from what a Black woman should be or what a Nigerian woman should be. This book made me feel even more seen than Americana did and I never believed it possible. With the drive of Omelogor, the layers of Zikora and the soft heart of Chia…I saw myself being seen by Ms Adichie. Nwannem daalu for this book. Thank you my sister
