From the Wall Street Journal best-selling author of 44 Chapters About 4 Men (inspiration for the Netflix Original series Sex/Life) comes a dark Mafia romance steeped in Irish folklore.

I can’t remember anymore if my grandfather’s eyes were blue or green, but I’ll never forget the way they wrinkled at the corners when he laughed at one of his own jokes. Or the way they sparkled with mischief when he told me tales about the magical creatures that dwelled in the forest behind his humble Irish sheep farm—shy fairies who liked to eat tea biscuits, cruel witches who liked to eat children, a moody lake spirit with a taste for expensive gifts.

As a child, I believed every fantastical word. But when he warned me about the mute boy who also lurked in those woods, the one the priest had declared to be the spawn of Satan himself, I refused to listen. Kellen wasn’t evil. He was kind, and beautiful, and special, and hurting. He was my friend. And with every summer I spent stolen away with him in those enchanted woods, he grew to become so much more.

But when I return to Glenshire as an adult, grieving and engaged to someone else, all those legends quickly morph into nightmares.

My grandfather had been right about everything, especially the boy.

If only I had listened.

The male narration is the ONLY thing that saved this. The female narrator....just not good at all.

listen to it, but hear me out..

One of my favorite reads of 2023! Can’t believe I just found this book. Eric Nolan does an amazing Kellen. I haven’t been so into a story in a while. My emotions were everywhere with this book. Definitely worth the credit! Will be listening to this again. Great job BB Easton on a beautiful story.

Kellen and Darby…. these two endured so much and came out on the other side in the most heartbreaking way possible. I was consumed by this book and the audiobook made it so even more emotional. From beginning to end this had me hooked, I loved them together and the way they not only fought for each other but themselves. Getting to experience them meeting as children losing touch and then finding their way back to one another. It was a harder read because of the topics and I cried a few times due to relatability unfortunately, but the way it was written was not triggering at all just so open and true to the mentality. This was one of my top reads of 2023 hands down, I can’t recommend it enough. BB did a great job creating this story and the narrators gave it life.

Absolutely amazing

Seriously speechless with the audio! Probably a top tier audio I’ve listened to! BB does amazing at writing the story but the voice actors just did phenomenal at narrating the story and bringing it to life.

We meet Darby and Kellen as young kids when Darby and her mom go visit her grandfather in Ireland. She seeks off on a hunt for fairy magic and finds a young boy, and a magical connection. Even though her grandfather warns her against befriending Kellen, she still makes sure every summer on her return to find him and play with him. Years later when Darby returns for better than happy reasons and has a run in Kellen, she finds out who he has become, and the warnings her grandfather gave her were mild in comparison.

The story is so captivating and will draw you in instantly. From a young girl who’s a fairytale dreamer to an adult who is faced with crime and blood, you just love following along with Darby and her journey and growth. And Kellen is so mysterious and dark and tortured but easily gravitated to. Eric Nolan and his Irish accent makes it easy to just get lost in the words.

Just so much to not give away but everything I highlight recommended everyone to read, especially audio fans!

I first read this book back in 2022 and now in 2024, I gave it a listen before the next book in the series comes out. And WOW! Elizabeth Klett was phenomenal as Darby and all the accents she had. And Eric Nolan? Hello, my fine Irish lad! Wonderful cast of narrators that brought the story to life. Would highly recommend listening to it.

'If the Devil had been God's most beautiful angel, then Kellen wasn't just his son. He was the Prince of Darkness himself.'

Each time I read a BB Easton book, I know she is going to give me a little something different than I would ever expect. This was a mash up of folklore and mafia romance all set in Ireland. Say what?! This genre bending author brings an original story that is beautifully told with characters that are damaged but find the magic and love with one another against all odds.

What can I say about this story except that I loved it right from the start. Being dropped right into Ireland when young Darby and her mother begin their yearly visits with her grandfather. He's an entertaining character that I wish we got more of. He tells stories of his land, the fairies, the magic and the tale of the Lady in the Lough (Lake). It's this magical land that brings Darby to meet a young boy named Kellen that is looking to run away from his darkness at home.

But those yearly visits soon stop and Darby's life takes a very drastic turn, as does Kellen's. By the time Darby is able to return to Ireland for her grandfather's funeral, the young "fairy" boy that Darby befriended years before is nowhere to be found. This is when the story turns mafia and quite a bit more dark. Check your triggers and be ready to be taken on a bloody ride of intensity.

This was an unusual story that had me rooting for the darkness that these characters held within. Rooting for the beauty these characters found as children to return to their lives with one another. They were destined to be from the start, but life took some brutal turns before they reconnected. This story will have you holding your breath and grasping for your heart. It's beautiful, it's dark, it's twisted and it's just WOW! Unique and well paced from beginning to end. I fell in love with Darby and Kellen and am thankful their story didn't end too soon. Everything they went through brought them to each other.

With all that said, I loved this story and am still thinking about it a week later. AND that ending/epilogue with the author's note? Perfection. I love when it all gets a personal twist!

Great narrators that did the book justice

This was such a good story. I haven't heard anything like it. It was hard and beautiful at the same time. The male narrator was PHENOMENAL! He definitely brought this book to life.

AMAZING

This story was tragic along with being a great love story. The two main characters are bound as young children and live horrific lives until they meet again.

Dark story line that’s a must read!
