Kelsea Yu’s DEMON SONG is a modern gothic horror novella that draws inspiration from the musical Phantom of the Opera and mythology from the 16th-century Chinese classic, Journey to the West.

On the run from an abusive man, Megan Liu and her mom find work cleaning an ancient Beijing opera house in exchange for room and board. Meeting Kristy, the lead performer of the theater’s current show, ignites Megan’s long-buried singing ambition. But Kristy’s hiding something; and digging into her secrets, Megan uncovers more mysteries—including her mom’s childhood connection to the theater and a decades-old murder. The more Megan learns, the more her dreams and reality begin to blur. Something’s calling her from deep within the opera house, and it’s ravenous…

This book was total different. It was okay, but it was definitely different than and I was expecting say chinese version (twisted) basically of the phantom of the opera... with odd dreams and the monkey king making appearances... Moohahahaha but I did enjoy it, it was a good story. And a good narrator...

Megan and her mother have been moving from place to place for what seems like forever. from one bad relationship to another, Megan's mother is just trying to survive. after surviving another abusive boyfriend, her mother finds them lodging at a historic Chinese opera house.

The building is alive with detail. The mythology is carefully doled out as the story proceeds. The inevitable conclusion plods along, mixing elements of horror and enchantment. This is the type of book that keeps you saying, "Just one more chapter."

Natalie did an amazing job in her narration and I continue to pick up audiobooks based solely upon her involvement. The story came alive with her words.

A captivating gothic fantasy rich with Chinese mythology
