This chilling short story is the prequel to The Dragon Factory, the second installment in Maberry’s action-packed Joe Ledger novels.

Before Baltimore cop Joe Ledger goes up against two competing groups of geneticists looking to continue the master-race program in The Dragon Factory, he must battle another foe using human test subjects for his sinister plans.

This little change of pace is so fun to read, and so scary because it portrays an attitude that I know actually does exist in our country’s leaders and upper staff.
Since the first days of our Country’s existence, the military personnel have been used to find out the limits of Man’s endurance, and the capabilities of our technology and equipment.
I, myself, was used in a couple of small “experiments.” Fortunately, the effects on my body were limited to degradation of my sight and hearing, ; I’ve always been grateful that my losses were not complete.
Looking back, I do see the same attitudes reflected in this short story. I left the Marine Corps after nine years, without ever any official confirmation of the experiments, any thanks, or compensation.
I still celebrate my love for Corps and Country, I have never spoken with anyone about the experiments, or the effects on me. In my heart, I always remember that any organization, no matter how good, that is run by People, can and will, at some point, be led by someone who has these same ideas of ‘no limits’ on the the “ownership” of it’s personnel.
I pray, but I still know.

An enjoyable excursion

If you could sum up Deep, Dark in three words, what would they be?

Engaging, fast-paced, fantastical.

If you’ve listened to books by Jonathan Maberry before, how does this one compare?

I'm not a science fiction fan, but Mr. Maberry hooked me in on this story.

Which scene was your favorite?

I enjoyed the suspenseful set-up - you don't know what they're going to find when they are descending an elevator deep into the earth - but you know it's terrifying.

Engaging!

The art of the short story... well as much as I know that it seems wrong, but not a lot of them are 'complete'. If you grab me? This writer has been in constant mode & done so very well 👏! I really enjoy Joe Ledger tales & I'd say KEEP IT COMING Sir if you please? Not to forget, Id appreciate if we got this narrator/actor every time. Gripping, dramatic, painful, jovial & a terrific smart ass overall. More please! Long live Joe Ledger in any rank sequel or prequel! This are more than war torn stories that tear at your emotions. Truly amazing drama in my opinion Thank you & ENJOY PLEASE

Way to go Jonathan !
