A prison doctor injects a condemned serial killer with a formula designed to keep his consciousness awake while his body rots in the grave. But all drugs have unforeseen side-effects. Before he could be buried, the killer wakes up. Hungry. Infected. Contagious. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang…but a bite.

Critic reviews

“This has to be one of the best traditional zombie tales I've ever read... This is a zombie book for the ages.” —Seattle Post Intelligencer

“Maberry grounds the story with scientific confidence, spares no attention to detail, and presents the undead as more than faceless targets.” —Publishers Weekly

The story was fast moving, the characters seemed real, and the story was "believable", as far as zombie stories go. Can't wait for th next book!

Great book!

I thoroughly enjoyed njoyed this Zombie to type novel. characters believable and a decent explanation of how an apocalypse of this type could start. Raw, gritty and kept me listening with good progression of story while still developing characters.

excellent fresh take on Zombies

I really enjoyed this book. I do wish it would have more sound effects in the audible version like they do in some other books. That would be my only complaint.

Very good book

This was a good read but the narration was just god awful. I really wish they would just have Ray Porter redo all JM books that he didn't get a chance to.

Great book buy a horrible narrator

Being a big fan of Jonathan Maberry, I tried... I mean I really tried... to like this novel. But after a couple hours listening to the extreme and unnecessary over acting (can you say over-the-top?) of the narrator (William Dufris) I just couldn't take it any more. It was literally painful to listen to. I strongly encourage Mr Dufris take a lesson from other far more capable narrators such as Ray Porter and RC Bray. If not, then a change in profession would be a wise choice.

Such a shame, as I'm sure Maberry's book is worth a read. But trust me, in this form it is NOT worth a listen. <sigh>

Good story potential but the narrator RUINED it!

This book had me at the edge of my seat. The narrator used his voice effectively to keep the suspense going. Jonathan Maberry has done it again. 😃

Most of my zombie experience has come from film and this just happens to be my first experience with Jonathan Maberry (despite his name being associated with a ton of zombie/monster books). For me, the book would probably get a 3 1/2 star rating, but it's impossible to do that. My way of rating a book is weird, because I only give out fives if I find it to be a perfect/near-perfect novel. So, a four would mean that it was an incredible piece of fiction. 'Dead of Night' was almost there, but there were parts that I wish were focused on more and parts I wish had less detail.

Honestly, if you like zombie books or movies, you will really enjoy this one. Again, I haven't even read Patient Zero, which seems to be Maberry's most popular piece of fiction. It was entertaining and there weren't too many characters that were focused on. That's what I find the problem with a lot of these books is that they have characters all over the place with their own story. Dead of Night has a few key eyes to see the story through, while going into a different perspective for just a second in order to tell a different part of the story.

So, I'm going to give Dead of Night a 3 1/2 rating or a B-grade. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to read the sequel, because, based on his other works, there ends up being A LOT of them. However, I'm very intrigued, so, if I have the time, I'm definitely going to continue the story by reading book #2. I think it'll be worth it for sure.

Decent Story, Great Writing, & Great Narration

The story was good overall for the book but the narrator totally screwed it up by being over the top on the narration. He made the story telling annoying instead of enjoyable. If you’re thinking about purchasing listen to the preview first so that way you can hear how over the top he is.

Pretty good story overall for a zombie book

Downloading the second book now. I wondered what Maberry would do after the Joe Ledger books. I'm glad I know the answer. I really liked the change in direction of protagonist "Dez" Desdemona Fox away from Joseph Francis Ledger. Maberry's touch is not a "feminized" machismo rehash. One could say of the genre, "been there, done that, got the mangled blood-soaked t-shirt but Maberry continues to give us stuff that never elicits the exhaled groan of, "Oh, please!"
William Dufris is fantastic! (Stephenson's Cryptonomicon is a must listen as well as Scalzi's works) Dufris could read take-out menus and it would be auditory gold.
I'm glad I can add Maberry to my list of authors that never disappoint and am anxious to see what new creation is unleashed from their minds.

Another epic Maberry treat!

After listening to the entire Joe ledger series narrated by ray porter, this guy does not do the author justice. I did purchase the second book based solely off of. Red to hear the story. Personally that nanny chic could read the book as long as it gets told. Overall great book.

Where's ray porter when you need him
