Editorial reviews

After attorney Benedetta Rosato loses her wallet, she receives bills for identical dresses she didn’t buy and is arrested for a robbery she didn’t commit. Narrator Barbara Rosenblat is giddy and girlish when the cynical, wisecracking Bennie meets a hunky Navy SEAL and hard as nails as Bennie solves her client’s murder. When Bennie almost drowns trying to save her dog from Alice’s attempts to murder him, Rosenblat’s performance leaves the listener gasping for breath, relieved to be on dry land. Her witty take on the irrepressible Bennie and her snide asides make the occasionally unlikely plot gimmicks and character inconsistencies almost disappear.

Publisher's summary

Lately, Bennie Rosato has her eye focused firmly on the bottom line, especially since she has three dedicated young associates and a very pregnant secretary on her payroll; so she takes a professional risk, charging into a class action lawsuit that could make, or break, her career.

Then her wallet goes missing. And Bennie's life goes crazy.

Someone is posing as the outspoken, blue-eyed, blond attorney and is wreaking havoc around town, apparently determined to destroy everything Bennie loves. Only one person can pull off this double deception: Bennie's identical twin sister, Alice Connelly. But as far as Bennie knows, Alice left Philly long ago and never looked back.

When events escalate into murder, the maverick lawyer realizes that the stakes are far greater than she feared. But Bennie Rosato refuses to be anyone's victim. To find the killer, she'll plunge headfirst into a life-and-death investigation that will bring her face to face with an evil darker, yet more familiar, than anything before.

Lisa Scottoline does it again! :)

A very good read! I have read all the Lisa Scottoline novels available in audio and I think they are wonderful! This book is no exception! Events which may or may not be related combine to create a complex and suspenseful tale of treachery and greed capped off with friendships old and new both growing and maturing as the characters grow and change. I think the reader is wonderful for this series! She does beautifully with the different dialects and languages and makes each character seem unique and individual! All in all very enjoyable!

Better and better

I love that Scottoline moves from character to character in her novels, giving each of her Philadelphia attorneys a chance to shine. Danger, a hint of romance, and lots of likeable characters, some of whom actually experienced growth drew me into the story. Rosenblat gives a good read, and this mystery just didn't seem long enough--I didn't want this treat to end so soon.

Not Your Typical 'Evil Twin' Story

You may be thinking what I was thinking. Who would use such an ancient (and silly) plot device??? Scottoline only uses her 'evil twin' as one thread of of many different plot strands to keep you thrilled. So *don't worry* the entire book is NOT only about an evil twin ruining her life. The biggest one being "My firm is going bankrupt!" (That twin girl is NOT helping!) she might add for a laugh. This writer does drama, law, and humor. You learn a bit of law, *laugh at the MANY comic thoughts that cross her character's lips or minds*. See above or another idea: about a "cursing diet." I've yet to listen to a Scottoline / Rosenblatt read book that was not a winning combination. Again, the author is not intending to win a Pulitzer but she does know how to entertain and she can actually make lawyers seem warm, fuzzy, and caring. Now THAT is a a difficult writing task at which she always succeeds.

Good story, Horrible reader

One of the most frustrating things about this story is the reader. I can hear every slurp, sniffle and gasp and it really takes away from the story itself. I enjoyed the story but I would caution any listener that is sensitive to pronunciation, timing, and throat noises, pick up something else. It makes me wonder if anyone checked this piece for sound quality before releasing.

Kept on the edge

Loved it. Very intriguing and interesting. Venue is just the kind of person I'd like to be. Sharp, witty yet compassionate.

Disappointed

This is my first book by this author, I just tried to get into it, but I just couldn’t so I’m not going to finish it. The narrator’s voice sounded older to me than the character which made it difficult to listen.

Not one of Scottiline’s best

I did finish the book. Towards the middle, I was tempted to quit because some things didn’t seem plausible, but I was curious about the ending. In a print book, I would have skimmed through and peeked at the end. I love the narrator

Couldn't wait for it to end

This book was a disappoi nt on several levels. I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be a comedy or a mystery. The snide and flip references to what were supposed to be serious issues were grating and annoying. There was so much filler and so little plot. The narrator was good but the constant joking asides felt like a disconnect with what I thought was supposed to be a serious story. The prose was very good but sadly that was not rough to make up for the rest of the book's deficiencies.

Bad language, funny author

As usual, Scottoline keeps you guessing. The language factor kept me turning it down and worrying about the kids overhearing. Unfortunately, you never know which of her books will have awful language (Jesus Christ, the f-bomb...all mixed up together). I'm guessing she cleaned them up at some point, but this wasn't one of the clean ones.
The characters are fun, though, and the author has some really funny lines that made me giggle.
