The acclaimed national and international bestseller

“Epic, romantic, and enthralling from start to finish.”—Stephanie Garber, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Caraval series

“An all-consuming work of literary fantasy that is breathtaking both for its beauty and its suspense."—BookPage, starred review

A captivating and romantic debut epic fantasy inspired by the legend of the Chinese moon goddess, Chang’e, in which a young woman’s quest to free her mother pits her against the most powerful immortal in the realm.

Growing up on the moon, Xingyin is accustomed to solitude, unaware that she is being hidden from the feared Celestial Emperor who exiled her mother for stealing his elixir of immortality. But when Xingyin’s magic flares and her existence is discovered, she is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind.

Alone, powerless, and afraid, she makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets. Disguising her identity, she seizes an opportunity to learn alongside the emperor’s son, mastering archery and magic, even as passion flames between her and the prince.

To save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies. But when treachery looms and forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, she must challenge the ruthless Celestial Emperor for her dream—striking a dangerous bargain in which she is torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos.

Daughter of the Moon Goddess begins an enchanting duology which weaves ancient Chinese mythology into a sweeping adventure of immortals and magic, of loss and sacrifice—where love vies with honor, dreams are fraught with betrayal, and hope emerges triumphant.

Editor's Pick

A debut fantasy for mythology lovers
Daughter of the Moon Goddess* is at the intersection of all the things that mark my favorite stories: folkloric vibes, the promise of love, a great narrator, and a proactive main character. Inspired by the legend of Chang’e, the Chinese moon goddess, I was so intrigued to hear a story from the side of the divine. Despite being an immortal, Xingyin is not safe from danger or strife. I followed her journey with rapt attention as she learns to make a place for herself in the Celestial Kingdom while hiding her identity for fear of the wrath of the Celestial Emperor. Narrator Natalie Naudus’s performance is the kind where you immediately sink into the story. In short: the stakes are high, the love is deep, and the story is totally worth your time. I can’t wait to hear what Sue Lynn Tan has for us next. —Melissa B., Audible Editor

I love Chinese Fantasy and this was very satisfying. I would’ve liked to hear more personal thoughts from the emperor and especially the empress, as her temperament led me to wonder at her scalding reactions and almost constant aggressiveness. I also found the author’s over abundance of the phrase “something in me snapped” to be a bit redundant and worthy of the eye rolls that I began to find myself issuing. However, overall I very much enjoyed listening. The story was engaging and the characters were relatable. I loved the dragons and their descriptions. The battles were exciting and numerous enough to leave me quite happy with it. Definitely worth the credit if you are into this kind of fantasy fiction.

Enjoyed this!

Xiaoying is a fantastic heroine, and yes, there are times she acts irrationally and emotionally, but she's human. She is smart, tough, and not a love-sick fmc that can't do anything on her own or is fixated on a love-triangle instead of an actual plot.

About... maybe a third or halfway through, a lot of things start to happen and there is, I feel, non-stop action, stakes, problems, decisions, twists. Ah, so many things. Not to say the beginning is boring or slow, but rather like a domino chain that hits a bigger domino and so on.

The narrator is fantastic. A+

finally, a "badass fmc" that is actually a badass

What a lovely book. I guess it’s Y/A? In any case, the narration is very atmospheric and the story is beautiful. My only question is that at one point a character is handcuffed but still able to pour wine, change clothes, etc. I wouldn’t bring it up except I kept rewinding, thinking the cuffs had come off and I had missed a section. I still think I must have? Also, some characters from the beginning were never seen again, and I kept waiting for their return. But I recommend this if you’re in the mood for a romance with magic infused. If you’re looking for something more realistic and gritty, pass.

Ok I found this gem on book tok and was skeptical because it wasn’t a book that I’ll typically read. BUT boy oh boy this story pulled me right in from the start I didn’t want to put it down (if only sleep wasn’t important loljk). All in all, the author gave so much realism to her characters that it was clear that each of them would be going through a self-discovery. Also what made the book stand out was the twist and turns of adventure; it felt like I was imagining scenes from a movie. This is a wonderful debut book 12/10🔥🔥

I love a story that is well flushed out, includes twists and turns, and has an ending that gives closure even if it’s not the last book in a series.

Very well written

The details and textures of this story adds so much to the dramatic pace. I especially enjoyed of the enfoldment of a brave young women. A lovely model for all the real life choices and betrayals. Our lives are based on our choices and how we learn and grow from them. I wish I had a magic bow of fire.

Love this.

“Daughter Of The Moon Goddess” was enchanting and like a magical dream. What I really appreciate about ancient Chinese culture with their stories, folklore, and legends is they are told with such elegance, art, and beauty. I have read many books that read such as this one. If you enjoy books from Janie Chang, Lisa See, or Weina Dai Randel you will swoon over this title as well. Cannot wait to read the second & last book in the series.

Beautiful & Enjoyable Read
