“Connolly has crafted one of the most darkly intriguing books this reviewer has encountered in more than three decades of reading crime fiction.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

The second thriller in John Connolly's bestselling, chilling series featuring haunted private investigator Charlie Parker.

Charlier Parker, a former New York City detective with a haunted past, befriends a down-and-out mother with a small child. When she turns up dead, Charlie's first suspect is her estranged husband. Charlie follows the man's trail to Maine and there he becomes entangled in a series of strange occurances which all seem to harken back to a string of unsolved murders that took place generations before. The murders were never solved and now Charlie must hunt for a killer and the connection between two crimes that span a century.

I’m in my happy place when listening to the Charlie Parker series. The story is perfectly written with the best choices of vocabulary that thrill’s me.

John Connolly writes books I can’t stop listening to.

You’ll get used to the narrators voice after a while, but his annoying mispronunciation of words, some over and over, distract from the story. I found I had to go back and re-listen to passages because my train of thought switched from the story to thinking about the bizarre pronunciation of some of his words.

Annoying narration

I am already in love with this series and so glad it’s a long one!!

Obsessed

This has always been a favorite series of mine. As I reread the books for the second or third time, I find they get better and better. Charlie, Louis, and Angel are three dimensional, riveting characters. The twisted takes get better each time if possible.

Just as good the second time around

I’m not sure who directs the voice narration in these books, but they really should be fired. Allowing Jeff Harding to continually mispronounce names, locations, and simple words is silly. Every time he utters the name “Cheryl” with a hard “ch” sound, takes me right out of the story. I think Jeff needs a new career. His work on Every Dead Thing was equally horrendous.

The book… is good. Of course it is!

Another Great Parker Book With Less Than Great Narration

I lost at least a full night's sleep, being captivated by this very well-read and suspenseful story!

So we'll done. Macabre and amazing, loved it. Second time read and just as good.

Excellent

Dark Hollow locks Parker in his element, facing a nightmare antagonist that’ll mess with your head. Side characters? Yeah, they can be a little tangled, but that just makes the world feel raw and real. I love the way Parker’s getting comfortable in his skin — gritty, sharp, and lethal. The tension hits hard and never lets up. On the downside, the tertiary cast sometimes demands extra focus to keep track, which can slow the pace a bit. Still, if you’re craving a twisted, gripping ride, this one’s a no-brainer.
