Story
After his town is put to the sword and the children are taken to replace the fallen, an old man is out for revenge. He’s ready to fail at the most difficult challenge in the world: cultivation. Too corrupted to even take the first steps, the sly old elder simply agreed with those who told him that it was impossible. Then, he quietly ignored them, rubbed his hands together, and started anyway. He had always failed in what he did. The only thing that had never failed him was his sharp mind and philosophy. He would cultivate...no matter what it cost him.

This book caught me by surprise!
I started listening to this book without any predisposition, both the author and the narrator were unknown to me and based on the little feedback I had come across I was somewhat afraid it might be a children’s book. Halfway thru the book I’m glad I gave it a shot! I read somewhere it was Harry Potter meets Star Wars, however personally I feel it’s closer to lord of the rings steampunk, most importantly I find the book very entertaining and I recommend it for new listeners.

Well written techno magic books are a treasure
I’ve been looking for techno magic books for a long time. I love a well thought out magic system and I love to see what a character can do when combining science and creativity with magic. This first book is everything I want in the genre and on top of that there is a body of outstanding art for it to really spark your imagination. If you’re worried that the book doesn’t have enough reviews yet don’t give it a second thought. This series is likely to become one of the most popular books in the genre, and it’s definitely worth listening to.

Fun book influenced by Final Fantasy and Harry Potter
I listened to a free copy of the audiobook provided by the author for an unbiased review.
Fun book! It is a hero’s journey with setting heavily influenced by Final Fantasy and Harry Potter. (It even has minor characters named Cid, Biggs, and Wedge—the latter two of course being FF’s nod to Star Wars.)
Magic and highly advanced tech share a world tidally locked. They have the technology to get to other planets, but have been blockaded and at odds with each other for a long time.
Since I listened to it, I’m honestly not sure if it is a graphic novel or a novel with illustrations. I enjoyed it as an audiobook, and I’ll probably get the book copy at some point to see the art.
It is aimed at younger readers, but it was great to geek out to as an adult. I am looking forward to continuing the series.

Just like harry potter
I am a fan of Harry Potter series and when I found out that this book is based on magic I decided to give this audiobook a try and I must say that this turned out to be better than I was expecting it to be, the story is about Magic vs Machine, the main character Jono seems like Harry potter, he like Harry potter found himself in a situation where he can change the world, and as the story moves forward he grows up like Harry potter, even though the story feels like Harry potter, it in general is different from it and the world of Jono is awesome.

Amazing! Fantastic Start
This is a fantastic start to what promises to be a grand adventure. I loved the world author Jacob Israel Grey has imagined. The reader/listener is immediately transported and swept away. I can't say enough about book 1. It kept me guessing how things would turn out until the very end, and even then I was pleasantly surprised. I look forward to book 2.
This is the first time I've had the pleasure of listening to the performance of Wayne Farrell. It will not be my last. Wow! I loved everything about his performance. Pace, characters, timing...excellent storyteller! Especially perfect for this genre. Super team of author and narrator. I truly expect to hear of Earphone awards winner for Farrell. Bravo!
I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request. My review is unbiased and freely offered.

Fantastic world building and excellent performance
When I first recommended this book, I was a bit worried the story could really be geared to only younger readers. Thankfully this was not the case. The author does an excellent job of showing us the world, one that easily feels real. Main characters are well developed too. The story is fairly straightforward but well done. We learn about and understand these characters enough to care about what happens to them and the rest of this world. One small struggle for me was how long the build up for the climax was. When a clear and simple solution for a problem is the very thing a major character focused on for half a book but that character is like "I feel so helpless but what could I do?", it had me grumbling back to "Come on, just ......". However, even that frustration showed me I was invested in the story. Certainly recommended.
Loved the narrator's performance. Good pacing, smooth experience, and a good range of voices to know who is speaking. Performance adds to the experience.
I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this honest review.

The narration is exceptional
Having owned the book for years but not read it I downloaded the audio to listen to as I drive. I should have read it when I bought it. An engrossing story with a steadily evolving and involving cast set in a well constructed universe over a traditional story arc. The narration is exceptional and allows you to sink into the story and characters like a read book, no jarring over performance or theatrics just clear, beautifully read storytelling.
