Publisher's Summary

As a leader in teaching, training, and transforming boys in Detroit, Jason Wilson shares his own story of discovering what it means to “be a man” in this life-changing memoir.

His grandfather’s lynching in the deep South, the murders of his two older brothers, and his verbally harsh and absent father all worked together to form Jason Wilson’s childhood. But it was his decision to acknowledge his emotions and yield to God’s call on his life that made Wilson the man and leader he is today.

As the founder of one of the country’s most esteemed youth organizations, Wilson has decades of experience in strengthening the physical, mental, and emotional spirit of boys and men. In Cry Like a Man, Wilson explains the dangers men face in our culture’s definition of “masculinity” and gives listeners hope that healing is possible.

As Wilson writes, “My passion is to help boys and men find strength to become courageously transparent about their own brokenness as I shed light on the symptoms and causes of childhood trauma and ‘father wounds’. I long to see men free themselves from emotional incarceration - to see their minds renewed, souls weaned, and relationships restored.”

Emotional Incarceration

Don't let the title of the book fool you to believe that it just for men. I believe this book should be intended for Single moms raising a young man, Fathers needing love from their father, women facing domestic violence the impact. As a single mom, of a black young man its hard at time. The book should be renamed "Emotional Incarceration" because we all have demons that hunts us in the past presence and future if we don't deal with the issue. The best part, is the bible verse that gave you guidance. Mr. Wilson stay you your path young man. Nicole stay strong sista, you are a incredible strong woman

Thank you, my brother!!

This book is the mirror that all men from all walks of life need to stare into. From the time we are able to walk, we are told to get up and “be a man” if we fall and hurt ourselves. And then sports reinforce that mantra in us. We become a toxin to ourselves, and cannot properly grow to love effectively.

This was needed. I inserted myself into every instance of life and death in this book, and couldn’t differentiate my life from yours at times.

My wife and I are going through some patches, pandemic or not, and this book made me really look at myself and realize the tough love that she appreciated years ago, is not what she needs more of today.

Thank you for opening my eyes to that small detail.

I have already recommended this book to all of my brothers and friends, and will now be starting on your next book once I post this review.

God bless you, sir, and I thank Him for keeping you.

If only I read this sooner

This book should be distributed to all young men. There are so many lessons in here I wish I could have heard years ago. So much grief and pain could have been avoided. Give this book to your sons, fathers, and brothers, especially the ones whom are quiet.

And then what?

Often as men we don’t express our feelings...we didn’t see others do it...we think it’s a sign of weakness...

Jason Wilson shares his life in a meaningful, honest and transparent way.

Few have had it as hard as Jason. So he shows there’s no excuse.

Some think your soft to surrender to Yah’s plan. Jason is anything but soft.

Many think if you commit to follow Yeshua you will never have challenges or failures. Jason shows God’s faithfulness through our failures.

Truly a book any man can benefit from.

I Read, I Cried, I want some more!

I loved listening to Jason tell his story which resonated so much with mine. Hearing his breakthrough inspires me to continue to trust God (Ya) for mine. My favorite chapter was the crucible and I can't wait to read your next book, BATTLECRY! The narrator is Jason himself and I am so grateful for his dedication to this liberating artwork.

A deep insight into the life of Jason Wilson

Through honesty and vulnerability Wilson extends to recount his life thus offering insight, perspective and a accompanying friend on this journey of life.

A brilliant book to understand what it means to be a man and ultimately; how to cry and let your emotions find a place of refuge.

A book for men especially black men

Loved the book and the stories. The vulnerability of Jason to open up. It must have been hard. It was full of stories that can help and make you see there’s always hope. Wish there were more anecdotes. Is there a course for this? Will really love to sign up

ENCOURAGING, INSPIRING!

I found Jason’s story to be quite healing and hope-inspiring too. Many men in today’s society can identify with father wounds therefore, this book would be very helpful to them. This is a narrative that many more should hear about!

HEARTFELT!

An awesome account of a man's journey through emotional development... It challenges what it is to be a "strong" man or a "real" man. This was a great listen! 🖤
