Publisher's summary

For generations, homeownership has been an avenue to a better life. But discriminatory policies left many people out, and today’s trend of rising home prices continues to put housing beyond the reach of significant sectors of the workforce. This is particularly true in America’s urban centers, where a shortage of affordable housing is stifling social and economic mobility.

We must face this problem with a balance of compassion and competence. The solution will require the efforts of many - including the public sector, private developers, financial institutions, and community leaders - working together to find creative solutions rather than relying on the policies of the past.

In Creating the Urban Dream, Clay Grubb shares the strategic focus of his decades-long career: how to provide good homes for the many people who need them and create dynamic neighborhoods where they can better their lives.

Investing in the future through secure, affordable housing will be our country’s challenge for many years to come and a huge opportunity for those who will join in helping to solve it.

Running for office?

Part of this book makes me think that he’s running for office. And then there are other parts of this book that sound like a corporate history a feel good history? And then the very last part of this book actually sounds like a sort of deep dive into housing policy so it’s like three different books.
The main thing seemed to be the housing area his company owns. It was an interesting history but a little too much like a company history, a little too rah-rah for me. I'm sure the people who work for his company might like it.
I found the narrator a little bit distracting. The narrator has a southern accent and it’s very light but it does pop up here and there and I don’t know if that was done on purpose. There were some words pronounced in a way I would just cock my head. Must be a Carolina thing. So I found it a little bit distracting. Note: I am a southerner.
