Publisher's summary

The infamous Dodd murders are hardly among Eastport's proudest legacies. So when best-selling true-crime author Carolyn Rathbone arrives to research the case for a new book, the locals in the seaside town let her know that she's about as welcome as a spoiled clam. But surely no one would harm a crime writer out of a sense of civic pride--or would they?

Jake has her own problems, from the mysteries of old-house insulation to an anonymous caller plaguing her with death threats. But with Carolyn's arrival, the slayings of the wealthy Dodd women suddenly go from cold case to hot topic - much to someone's dismay. For Carolyn Rathbone's untimely investigation has unearthed a string of deadly secrets that a cunning killer is grimly determined to rebury, right along with Carolyn herself.

Very depressing

I listened to this entire book hoping there'd be some redeeming cheerful parts but there were not. I don't really like books about serial killers, and I have listened to other books by Sarah Graves that were lighter, very enjoyable, and well worth the money. This is not that kind of book. I listen to audio books to be entertained, and to cozy mysteries (which I would not classify this book as in any way shape or form) rather than to finish a book and feel I threw away my audible credit and have nothing to show for it but a feeling of sadness and depression.

This book is a dont read it dont buy it!

What would have made Crawlspace better?

The characters are not interesting or unique, the plot might have had a shot if the characters had not been so pathetic. It crept on and on and there was no reason to care about anyone.

Really beyond credibility...ham-fisted plot

While the narration is flawless and compelling, the story was one ridiculous scene after another. It was a an unending series of 'gotcha' moments interspersed with tedious stream-of-consciousness interior monologues. And it's hard to feel much more than frustration with a plot that is hammered at you with heavy melodrama. And finally,I found it ridiculous that Jake *again* loses her weapon because she still doesn't have a proper holster! She claims her husband is an expert who has schooled her in how to use a weapon, yet this is a glaring oversight.

Another winner

This is a great book. It started with action and kept it up through the entire book. This is the best in the series, so far.

Not Sarah's best

I have listened to, and enjoyed, all of Sarah Graves's Home Repair Is Homicide mysteries. This one, however, bored me to tears. I will finish it, because I've already invested so much time in it, but I'm really in a hurry to see it end. I don't know how it's going to end, but I just found myself thinking "kill her already, gees!" This is just too much cat-and-mouse. The bright spot is Lindsay Ellison's narration; as always, she is perfection.

Cozy Mystery or thriller?

I have noticed my anxiety levels going up since Sarah Graves changed her writing of this series. From Trap Door on we no longer follow Jake in the first person, instead all the characters are in 3rd person. This makes it possible for Sarah to follow the other characters as closely and so there is danger, cruelty, and violence throughout the book and we are left hanging through the story in a state of fear and anxiety. I feel that the stories are more like thrillers than cozy mystery. I loved the characters, especially Jake and Wade, but the change gives us much less personal time with the main characters and the focus becomes more on the crimes and violence. Thrillers are not my favorite genres but cozy mysteries are. A bit of a shame, not sure I want to read the last 3 books.

Slight change

With the books in this series, there is a slight change it seems to me. She does let the cops talk more and lets them try to get something done first but who allows anyone to question suspects? The main character still tells everyone to shut up we are doing my way and always is angry as she does it. Then her way gets them into trouble every time! Makes it worse for anyone who is with her. Sigh when does she learn her actions causes her loved ones pain. If i was her friend/family I would not do anything with her because my life is always at risk and she also has to have it her way all the time. I was hoping that this would change a growth in the this series that the main character would learn either by a friend or family member saying look stay away from me, you put me and my family at risk by thinking you know everything when you don't and until you give this up we can not see each other again.

Disappointed

I have read all the books in this series and I have really enjoyed them. This one was a huge disappointment. I understand the writer wants to write a story that is gripping and full of suspense, but this one went over the top and became a depressing story where everything that could go wrong, went wrong. The reader gets to a point where you just roll your eyes and say, “you’ve got to be kidding.” I finished it only because I had so much time invested in it.

No longer a “cozy” mystery

I have loved the characters in this series- still do, but Jake seems to be getting brain-dead- taking chances without any thought! Not securing her gun, etc.
the murderer is too dark, too violent to be “cozy”.

Amazing read.

I loved the animated characters, and am constantly surprised by the quality of writing that takes me into the story.

Interesting story but hard going.

The story-line is disjointed by all the many forays into dead end and totally unnecessary distractions; for example pages on describing how to insert wall insulation....as a reader I was totally disinterested and wondered what the relevance was? In other examples there were pages recounting reveries from characters (who are under dire threat and should be making getaways) engaging in long winded mental discussions on 'what ifs....' instead of actually reacting normally....or spending precious time in silly, unrealistic arguments when death threats beckon....
The thread of the story is continually interrupted by these blind alleys and completely dispenses with any suspense build up. It was a real marathon of intent to finish this one!

Crawlspace

Started well good character development Some really breathtakingly exciting moments. But ,then there were perhaps too many of them By the end it didn’t really delivery the promising outcome we had been built up for Still worth a listen Lynne
