A corporate mercenary wakes in a reconstructed body, a beautiful woman by his side. Then Hosaka Corporation reactivates him, for a mission more dangerous than the one he's recovering from: to get a defecting chief of R&D-and the biochip he's perfected-out intact. But this proves to be of supreme interest to certain other parties-some of whom aren't remotely human.©1986 William Gibson (P)2009 Audible, Inc. Gibson continues to capture the raw reality and motivation of his characters thoughts and actions. A classic must read.

excellent time defying storytelling

The cyberpunk prose, understated and individual stories weaving together in a complex tapestry of larger themes and ideas, and an incredible vocal performance, one of the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to!

Gibson is amazing at filling out his world and not using same characters each time. the nods to neuromancer was great and the new characters felt as real as molly and chase did.

another great cyberpunk voyage.

I've read and listened to this novel many times and it's an amazing experience each time. I won't review the book but will only say that Jonathan Davis is quickly becoming one of my favorite narrators. His performance here was outstanding. The pacing and tone of each line read really set the mood and was very well done. He also did Mona Lisa Drive which was another great performance.

I hope they redo the Neuromancer one with Jonathan Davis not only for completeness and consistency but because I'd love to hear him do a reading of it. Neuromancer is coming up on its 30th anniversary, so please make it happen!

Absolutely amazing!

In the sequel to Neuromancer, Gibson reveals an unintended consequence of Case's actions in the first novel: new AI gods. This time we have three main characters, a hard boiled mercenary, a disgraced art dealer, and a wannabe cowboy around who a new conspiracy weaves.

Neuromancer is still largely considered one of the greatest Science Fiction novels ever written and while Count Zero doesn't quite reach those heights it's still a very enjoyable read. Unfortunately, this performance is a big downside. Davis' sleepy and almost emotionless narration really takes its toll, especially during action sequences. That said, the story was interesting enough for me to finish the book, in spite of Davis. Ultimately, I'd still recommend Count Zero, especially if you're itching to get back to the Sprawl.

The Cyberspace is Evolving

Count Zero is the second book in Gibson's Sprawl Trilogy - Neuromancer being the first. Count Zero is not as hypnotic and it's predecessor. It's a not a direct sequel to the Neuromancer but is a story set in the same world 7 to 8 years after the events told in the first novel. At it's heart, Count Zero is crime drama with elements of a action-spy story. There are some downright cool crossover moments where events from the first novel are referenced and a supporting character or two make a short appearance in the story. I didn't enjoy Zero as much as Neuromancer because a big part of the fun of these books is learning about and exploring the world Gibson's characters inhabit. Zero retains much of the flavor of Neuromancer but is an entity in and of itself; worth a read.

Worth checking out

If you like shadowrun, the Matrix, or bladerunner then these are for you. Excellent series.

Great books

setting is similar to neuromancer, but the story was 2x more confusing. If you want to listen to a cyberpunk book with voodoo just listen to the second Altered Carbon book. overall Count Zero was ok, but neuromancer was much better.

it was ok

A classic, Count Zero, which I finally read in 12/21, seems like a Plausible prediction of what the meta-verse may become. It’s a little hard to track while it’s being read out loud.

Brilliant, is sometimes confusing in audio, VR precise

Where Neuromancer was filled with content, count 0 is filled with descriptions of people and places. Very little occurs in the entirety of the novel, aside from some AI corporate intrigue. the first third of the book had me falling asleep in boredom. fortunately Gibson does eventually get to the point and move the story a bit but only by very small degrees. if this had been the first Gibson book I read I probably wouldn't have bothered with much more.

Chapter 2; not much happens
