One misstep is all it takes to forever change the lives of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy.

During the ball at Netherfield Park, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are irretrievably compromised and forced to marry. Angered beyond reason, Mr. Darcy prepares the vilest marriage settlement known to man, forcing Mr. Bennet to accept his terms or suffer the consequences of ruined reputations and unwed daughters.

The repercussions that follow show a determined young lady with keen intelligence and a prideful man who realizes that the consequences of their compromise are the best things that have ever happened in his life.

The premise of this Pride and Prejudice variation is really fun. It does stretch Jane's Darcy characterization pretty far, but it's worth it in service to the plot, and to see Darcy's evolution.

My problem with this audiobook is the narrator. I'm not sure why she uses such a strange almost American Atlantic accent over the British. (But maybe there's a dialect in the UK I don't know about? Even if so, the voicing is not done well.) At times she actually uses kind of a creepy vampiric voice in the strangest places in the dialogue, where that kind of cryptic mysteriousness is totally at odds with the content.

So even though I did actually cringe during some of the voice characterization, I stuck with the book because the plot is fun and the writing is quite good.

Really fun premise.

I highly enjoyed this book. It was a delight to listen to. I had read the book before. So many smiles on my face and laughing out loud due to puns and wit. Great read. Great Jaff.

Great book.

You will start out not liking this Darcy, he has a lot to learn, and a lot to be forgiven for. I’ve read one or two others where he was a stubborn, blind, fool, but in those Lizzie already loved him and jealousy tore them apart.

In this one, it only takes a quick glimpse of a red coat disappearing through the trees at just the wrong time to send him into a tailspin.

It takes a bit to get him back on track, but the story is worth listening to and the narrator does a great job.

Oh Darcy!! You idiot!

This book is one of my favorite of Sue Barr’s novels. I have read it several times and listened to it twice. The first time I listened to it I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. Everyone, to some extent, makes up voices for the characters in a book while reading. Ms Thomas interpreted the book differently than I had. I dumped my preconceived notions and listened again after some time. My goodness, this is one of the best narrations I have heard. It is excellent, like listening to a play. Well done!

Delightful

I like the change of characters personalities. It was refreshing and enjoyable. Highly recommend for P&P fans!

Very nice original story

I read this several years ago & enjoyed this story and was thrilled when it came out in audio format. This has a very mad & mean Darcy who is forced to marry Elizabeth after an accident during the Netherfield Ball. Elizabeth who has read The Art of War uses that to her advantage and wins. Col Fitzwilliam & his parents quickly realizes what a butt Darcy is and tries to wake him up to the MAJOR errors that he has done. But he is so blinded by anger & jealousy that he cannot see straight. I love how the villains are dealt with and the scenes towards the end with Caroline & Bingley are fantastic, just wait until the end of the second epilogue! The narration was good but it seemed she struggled with a few of the characters but it is one I would listen to again. A few other reviewers mentioned more about this so I dont need to cover that. I hope that Sue Barr will continue to add her books as audiobooks as we all enjoy her stories!!

I actually really like this version and it may be one of my favorites. I know some have not liked the narrators voicing of some of the characters and while I agree she could have voiced some of them better, overall the narrator has a pleasant voice and I enjoyed her narration for most of the characters. I love the portrayal of the main characters in this version and despite the shortness of the book, I think it gives more character depth than many others. Also, the dialogue is exceptional keeping you entertained the entire way through. Some retellings drag on and have more chapters than are even needed, and this is not one of them.

One of my favorite retellings

I prefer low angst stories and this did not disappoint. This variation was cleverly done. I enjoyed it so much I couldn’t stop listening!

Very interesting storyline!

I'm not a huge fan of the narrator, however, she isn't too bad. Perhaps I'm simply too in love with the narration of Stevie Zimmerman and Harry Frost.
In regards to the writing, brava! This story certainly has some risque as well as parts that were quite shocking. I liked this piece and look forward to finding out more about this author.

Wowza

I enjoyed this Variation Very Much despite disliking Darcy for a good long while as he was more of a hard-headed ass than in most variations. Lizzy was really Fun with her knowledge of The Art of War. There is much that is Way Out There (must suspend belief), but Still, I liked this story. The Narrator did a good job, but you must pay attention as her soft voice sometimes makes it hard to know which female is talking. I do agree with another review that reader did not characterize Mrs Bennet as most narrators do - not screeching, loud, etc…. On the other hand, it makes listening to Mrs B more pleasant.

A bit Far-Fetched But Thoroughly Engrossing
