Publisher's Summary

In a town battered and bruised by war, one woman embarks upon an impossible search - and one man must face the past in the very place that almost destroyed him.

Tennessee, 1866. According to the last letter Irish immigrant Catriona O'Toole received from her twin brother, Ryan, he was being dispatched to Franklin, Tennessee, where - as a conscripted Confederate soldier - he likely endured the bloody Battle of Franklin that claimed the lives of thousands. Catriona leaves behind the lush green of their Irish homeland in search of him, with nothing to her name except the sum of cash Ryan sent to their family. Now the sole provider for her seven-year-old spitfire sister, Nora, Catriona hopes to reunite the siblings - the only surviving members of their devastated family.

Wade Cunningham is a former Federal soldier who now works for the newly formed United States Secret Service and is trying to uncover counterfeiting rings in the postwar South. In order to infiltrate their sophisticated enterprise, he must pose as a former Confederate in Franklin - a town where counterfeit greenbacks run rampant. When Wade meets Catriona, he is immediately intrigued by her and the little redheaded scamp in her care - but what he doesn't anticipate is that the cash in Catriona's possession is some of the most convincing counterfeit money he's ever seen. Soon the object of Wade's affection is also the suspect in a major crime - one he's expected to prosecute.

Ohhh so good!!!

I love all of Tamera Alexander's books, and this one joins the list. Being Southern born and of Irish descent, this book is extra special. Katrina, Nora and Wade will work their way into your heart. And the narrator is exceptional! Her command of the Irish accent is superb. We are very much looking forward to the next book.

A tender story of truth and redemption

I so appreciate how this book depicts the truth of our history. How God works through the characters deep hurts, and we seek the work of redemption that only God can accomplish. This story touched my heart so deeply. It’s truth is what we need to remember in the midst of the constant news of our country ‘s present crisis of wanting to rewrite our history. God wants us to learn! To obey His Word. And then lives will be changed for His glory.

Excellent Historical Romance

With This Pledge by Tamara Alexander is one of the best historical romance novels I’ve read set in the War Between the States.

Alexander has stayed close to true history, showing both North and South reasons for the war. However, she failed to mention that Lincoln did not free the slaves in 4 Union States, just those in the seceding states. I understand, how difficult it is to stand up for truth about a war so controversial, in a world determined to rewrite history.

Although President Lincoln’s thoughts on slavery in her novel were explained in the context of current teachings, not in 1860’s facts, her other historical points were very well done and documented.

Alexander painted the battle of Franklin in perfect details and the death of General Granbury and General Cleburne plus the other three generals in a compassionate way.

I found her other historical points were very well done. Her plot, characters and writing are excellent.

Another great historical fiction!

I love the historical portion of this book. The romance and storytelling seems to run along the same lines in all her books and becomes a bit repetitive (same looks, feelings described, hesitancy and they fully in love) but the books always end with a satisfying ending. I learned more about counterfeit money during that time period which was interesting.

Excellent historical novel

The characters in the book were believable. The incidents were steeped in accuracy of historical events. The author did an unusually good job of helping me “see” the appearances of the characters through subtle descriptions. I liked that the climax of the story wasn’t drawn out. And yet it was not abrupt. The reader was SUPERB, using ethnic voice inflections.

Beautiful and captivating story!

Loved this story from the start. Historical fiction is my favorite and especially by an author who shares my faith in the Lord Jesus. This story left me wanting to read more by this author. The narration is beautiful and flows so well with the story.
