AN NPR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR • A prescient new thriller in the #1 New York Times bestselling Avery Keene series, by nationally renowned author and leader Stacey Abrams, Coded Justice follows Avery down a dark rabbit hole into the breathtaking—and dangerously evolving—world of AI in the medical industry.

Former Supreme Court clerk Avery Keene is back . . . trying to put the past behind her at a prestigious high-end law firm in Washington, D.C. Head down and focused on a new life, Avery is now working as an internal investigator when a high-profile client seeks her out. Camasca Enterprises has a big problem and a short runway. The tech company has developed a new integrated AI system poised to revolutionize the medical industry. To prove its potential, Camasca’s charismatic founder, retired Major Rafe Diaz, has picked a complicated target: delivering cutting-edge health care to his fellow veterans. The potential is staggering, but their prototype has been plagued by a series of disturbing anomalies—culminating in the mysterious death of a beloved Camasca engineer.

Avery and her colleagues, Jared, Ling, and Noah, are brought into the secretive company to investigate from the inside out. At the epicenter of a burgeoning, controversial industry, and with billions of dollars on the line, their task is simple: to determine whether Camasca’s technical troubles and rising body count reveal something sinister at work. In Coded Justice, Stacey Abrams’s storytelling prowess is on full display—a deft combination of riveting twists and vibrant characters set against the fascinating landscape of the capabilities of artificial intelligence . . . and the moral boundaries that govern it. Coded Justice is Abrams’s most entertaining novel to date.

Critic reviews

A BookBub and Ebony Best Book of the Summer

“Through politics, fiction and her latest novel, Stacey Abrams aims to inspire action.... Avery Keene has unraveled international conspiracies and investigated mysteries involving the Supreme Court, but now she's focused on what could be a deadly side of artificial intelligence.”
NPR

“Death turns out to be a feature, not a flaw, of an AI product meant to bring a measure of social justice to medical care. Follow Avery Keene, the intrepid investigator at the heart of Stacey Abrams’ thriller novels, as she approaches the limit of human justice to strike back at the true killer app.”
New York Magazine

"Black Mirror, but for political thrillers.... Stacey Abrams is the queen of writing a strong female lead who is equal parts intelligent and relatable. Readers will admire and adore Avery in equal measure.... A fascinating exploration of the ethical questions surrounding AI."
—Ana Huang, author of Twisted Love, The Today Show

"Abrams enriches this fast-paced thriller with her sense of social justice... The very real concerns with veteran health, privacy, and the chilling prospect of AI run amok will engage readers’ brains and souls. Fans of Abrams' best-selling series will not be denied."
Booklist (starred)

"This compelling tome needs every page to lay the intricate plot, where AI gets too big for its britches, humans play catch-up, and nuanced arguments about ethics abound. Abrams galvanizes readers to understand the modern industrial-military complex and to agonize with her characters as they struggle to do the right thing."

It kept me guessing throughout while providing excellent insights into AI, cybersecurity, treatment of our Vets, and the shortfalls in our healthcare system.

There are so many pieces, I'm thinking of listening again to see (hear) what I missed the first time through.

A great story!

Thought-provoking and very timely

This story is mind blown, twist and turns, ups and downs and thrilling! I loved it and I will reread this one many times over. The narrator did a great job but should have had an another narrator for some of the accent like the Irish brogue. I have all of the Avery Keene series and I am excited to buy the next one in the series. Love me some Avery Keene. She is brilliant, clever, insightful, see problems around a hair pin turn and beautiful. She is such an exciting character. And this story just draws deep into the bowls of AI and all that it has to offer with table spoon of “oh sh*t”. A must read!

I never knew!!!!!

Once again, Stacy Abrams had my interest from very early in this story. It was like meeting up with old friends since these same characters were in a previous book. I had several ideas about the ending but none of them had every piece of the puzzle in place. I would love to see this in movie form.

The story was intriguing with the way it had AI as the central theme.
