Acerca de esta escucha
Though Anna Rosenberg emerged from modest immigrant beginnings, equipped with only a high school education, she was the real power behind national policies critical to America winning the war and prospering afterwards. Astonishingly, her story remains largely forgotten.
With a disarming mix of charm and Tammany-hewn toughness, Rosenberg began her career in public relations in 1920s Manhattan. As FDR's unofficial adviser, Rosenberg soon wielded enormous influence—no less potent for being subtle. Her extraordinary career continued after his death.
By 1950, she was tapped to become the assistant secretary of defense—the highest position ever held by a woman in the US military—prompting Senator Joe McCarthy to wage an unsuccessful smear campaign against her. Until the end of her life, Rosenberg fought tirelessly for causes from racial integration to women's equality to national healthcare.
More than the story of one remarkable woman, The Confidante explores who gets to be at the forefront of history, and why. In this inspiring, impeccably researched, and revelatory book, Christopher C. Gorham at last affords Anna Rosenberg the recognition she so richly deserves.

On April 6, 1965, Georges Lemay was relaxing on his yacht in a south Florida marina following one of the largest and most daring bank heists in Canadian history. For four years, the roguishly handsome criminal mastermind hid in plain sight, eluding capture and the combined efforts of the FBI, Interpol, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. His future appeared secure. What Lemay didn't know was that less than two hundred miles away at Cape Canaveral, a brilliant engineer named Harold Rosen was about to usher in the age of global live television.

“As Albert Einstein almost certainly never said, everyone is a genius—but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” So begins Katie Spalding’s spunky takedown of the Western canon, and how genius may not be as irrefutably great as we commonly understand. While most of us may never become Einstein, it may surprise you to learn that there’s probably a bunch of stuff you can do that Einstein couldn’t. And, as Spalding shows, the famous prodigies she explores here were quite odd by any definition.

Historia
Deep in the Arctic wilderness, Peter Freuchen awoke to find himself buried alive under the snow. During a sudden blizzard the night before, he had taken shelter underneath his dogsled and become trapped there while he slept. Now, as feeling drained from his body, he managed to claw a hole through the ice only to find himself in even greater danger: his beard, wet with condensation from his struggling breath, had frozen to his sled runners and lashed his head in place, exposing it to icy winds that needed only a few minutes to kill him. If Freuchen could escape that, he could escape anything.

Roosevelt is the only president to have served for three consecutive terms and voted in for a fourth, a fact that allows him to stand out among the long list of American presidents.

In the chaos following World War II, the US government faced many difficult decisions, including what to do with the Third Reich's scientific minds. These were the brains behind the Nazis' once-indomitable war machine. So began Operation Paperclip, a decades-long, covert project to bring Hitler's scientists and their families to the United States. Many of these men were accused of war crimes, and others had stood trial at Nuremberg; one was convicted of mass murder and slavery.

Historia
In the chaos following World War II, the US government faced many difficult decisions, including what to do with the Third Reich's scientific minds. These were the brains behind the Nazis' once-indomitable war machine. So began Operation Paperclip, a decades-long, covert project to bring Hitler's scientists and their families to the United States. Many of these men were accused of war crimes, and others had stood trial at Nuremberg; one was convicted of mass murder and slavery.

Historia
For more than 40 years, the US government has researched extrasensory perception, using it in attempts to locate hostages, fugitives, secret bases, and downed fighter jets, to divine other nations' secrets, and even to predict future threats to national security. The intelligence agencies and military services involved include CIA, DIA, NSA, DEA, the navy, air force, and army - and even the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Now, for the first time, New York Times best-selling author Annie Jacobsen tells the story of these radical, controversial programs.

Historia
In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her." The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and - despite her prosthetic leg - helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it.

Historia
When Pamela Churchill Harriman died in 1997, the obituaries that followed were predictably scathing–and many were downright sexist. Written off as a mere courtesan and social climber, her true legacy was overshadowed by a glamorous social life and her infamous erotic adventures. Much of what she did behind the scenes–on both sides of the Atlantic–remained invisible and secret. That is, until now: with a wealth of fresh research, interviews and newly discovered sources, Sonia Purnell unveils for the first time the full, spectacular story of how she left an indelible mark on the world today.

A remarkable woman in US twentieth century history
A good bio of a remarkable woman who had significant influence in the middle of the previous century for US government activities, especially concerning labor relations, war production, and support for military personnel during and after WWII and the Korean war.

A bit of a slow start but hang in there. This book is worth the time and credits. One of the best listens I’ve had in years.

Compelling and too-little known story about an amazing, important American
Great narrator, beautifully written, this book tells the story of a uniquely talented, accomplished and savvy woman whose life and work improved our lives—and whose story needs to be told and appreciated by all Americans.

Amazing woman!
(As posted in Goodreads)
Most of my readers know that I am not a history buff, so it should come as no surprise that I didn't start out liking this book much; the first part was straight history and no personality. But there's a guide into it, it started actually describing the individual personalities better, and I was blown away! I had never heard of Anna Rosenberg, despite the fact that she was clearly extremely important in the governments of a few presidents (notably FDR, LBJ, Eisenhower, and). She was extremely important in the integration of the military; she did a lot toward women's rights and recognition; she didn't work for herself but for the nation.
The book was absolutely fabulous, and in reintroduces the general public to an absolute fabulous personality and federal employee. She was well known in her time, but she has been totally forgotten.
Sad
I definitely appreciate the book for making history decidedly more relatable to a non-history person.

Fascinating account of all Anna Rosenberg did!!
I loved this book and only wish my parents were atill.alive so we could discuss all that Anna did to improve the way people were treated in our government and military while she worked with so many of our presidents. She really cared about all of those in the schools, military and government jobs, and the citizens of our country. She worked hard against segregation, discrimination against women, and prejudice of any kind! This was a great book.to read or.listen too! highly recommend!

An encouraging read!
Anna was a trailblazer for women in politics. We need more of her kind; smart, dedicated, selfless, and with the goal of what was best for the citizens.

Wish Anna Marie Rosenberg was in Washington now
Amazing history of a woman who came to politics as an organizer of people. A confidant of FDR, she listened and talked bringing out the best people had. Sadly we don't value that kind of person today.
