Jonathan Heights saw sunlight once. He must see it again.

At least, that’s what he claims when he charters an expedition east beyond the bounds of civilization. The Illuminated King has an abiding interest in such legends, while the Reflected Council is more interested in the treasures that they are convinced he has found, out there in the dark. The truth is shrouded and motives uncertain as Jonathan and the agents of both Crown and underworld take the airship Endeavor to the strange and exotic lands out there in the darkness.

Wonders and horrors both lie between the human lands and his ultimate goal: things long-forgotten and long-dead, that which could not be recorded on any map. They are temptation and terror to the wise and foolish alike, but not to Jonathan. He only has one goal in mind, and will not brook anything that stands between him and sunlight.

Truly fantastic. It reads almost as a "monster of the week" in a really satisfying way. There are plenty of unexplained and unexplainable things, but not too many that you're left unsatisfied at the end. The language was fantastic and caused me to look up a few words, but not so much that it felt out of place or pretentious. The build up was great, the escalation amazing, and the payoff immaculate. As a religious man, it was also really easy to read as an allegory akin to C. S. Lewis's "The Great Divorce", which is about the highest praise I can give, and I mean it.

Spoilers:

My only real complaint is that the inquisitor felt a bit left out to dry. I expected a bit more from him in the end, either a double cross or a redemption or an explanation or a deeper purpose. It felt like he had more to do and a deeper motivation, but it was really just what we all expected from the start, which is a bit unsatisfying.
Additionally, I would have loved a bit more time in the true east, past the Gates.

Story 9.5/10, pacing 9.5/10, characters 9.5/10, world 10/10, writing 10/10

The best Eldritch Horror I've read in 20 years.

A Victorian mystery novel meets the existential horror of lovercraft. An amazing tail worth listening to.

The book is amazing. I was very sceptical as usually a one book series, I.e. not a series at all, is usually too flat and uninteresting to me.

this however is such a deep world and so unbelievably much happening, with such fresh ideas that I listened to it twice in a row and enjoyed the repeat just as much.

I wished this was a series... there is so much to explore and seek out. so many places and secrets...

a true achievement. his best work yet

An interesting story that is different from IC's other works.

I quite liked the world building, and the flavor of it.

However, I admit that I found it difficult to become truly invested in the characters and plot of this one. The main character keeps his distance from others, and the reader.

Solid

Basically imagine a trust fund prick with a lot of wealth and no responsibiliy or remorse for having killed all his friends. Thats the MC. It doesn’t get better than that. The MC is consumed chasing the next high at whatever cost. Human or otherwise.

Dissapointing from the author

Rich trust-fund affluenza MC
