Publisher's summary

Rolling around in the worst fashion accessory ever….

Seventeen-year-old Merry has mucked up another chance to get into the University of Magecraft, so she doesn’t have time to deal with shape-changing creatures bent on stealing memories from the people of Woodshire. That’s her father’s job. But when an outlaw mage mistakes her for a damsel in distress on a drenched train platform, she’s dragged into a fight with the monsters and a sheriff mad enough to use them.

She’d never admit it out loud, but the mage is actually kind of fun to work with—when she doesn’t want to run him over with her chair. And he’s exactly the ally she needs when the monsters go after her father’s memories. But with bad guys who can look like friends and friends who look like outlaws, Merry has to decide who to trust and whether returning the stolen memories of those she cares about most is worth giving up her chance to finally earn respect as a mage.

Utterly charming.

I've known about this book for a couple of months and I'm sorry I took so long to get to it. This is a playfully delivered story with very important undertones and a powerful message.
I'm a huge fan of very dark epic fantasy but this is a lovely break from my usual fare.
Thank you.

Engaging; a true fairytale.

Usually when I hear “this author likes to retell fairytales.” I roll my eyes. It usually means the author 1. Couldn’t think of a good original idea. And 2. They will “Muck up” the whole project because they don’t understand what made those fairytales good. Kendra Merritt did neither of these things. The setting is thoroughly thought through, the characters and their motivations are sound, and we get the soft undertones of the fairytales she bases this story on. I tip my magic hat to you Madam. I will now be buying the rest of your books. Thanks also to the reader of this story.

Inspiring, clean and fun

I read the book first and really enjoyed it, it’s a great story that I highly recommend. Kristin James’ superb performance brought it to life and made it even more fun.

I hope to see more of Kendra Merrits books on Audible.

As a long-time fan of this series, I was very excited when I learned the audiobook was coming out. The narrator did not disappoint, though I object to the pronunciation used for the word vytl. The plot and the characters are complex and engaging. I think that the development of the various interpersonal relationships was very well done. What really draws me to this author’s work is the incredible worldbuilding, along with the respectful and powerful depiction of disabled characters.
I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
