Publisher's summary

Scandalous, sentimental, frank, and sincere - the ultimate inside account of a television and film icon.

Burt Reynolds has been a Hollywood leading man for six decades, known for his legendary performances, sex-symbol status, and storied Hollywood romances. In his long career of stardom, during which he was number one at the box office for five years in a row, Reynolds has seen it all. But Enough About Me will tell his story through the people he’s encountered on his amazing journey. In his words, he plans to “call out the assholes”, try to make amends for “being the asshole myself on too many occasions”, and pay homage to the many heroes he has come to love and respect.

Beginning with Reynolds’s adolescence as a notable football player and the devastating car accident that ended his sports career, But Enough About Me takes listeners from the Broadway stages where Reynolds got his start to his subsequent rise to fame. From Oscar nominations, to the spread in Cosmopolitan magazine that remains a notorious pop-cultural touchstone to this day, to the financial decisions that took him from rich to poor and back again, Reynolds shares the wisdom that has come from his many highs and lows.

He is also ready, now more than ever, to dish. Reynolds famously romanced Dinah Shore, Sally Field, and Loni Anderson, to name only the top few; batted eyes at Bette Davis, Greta Garbo, Goldie Hawn, Farrah Fawcett, Marilyn Monroe, Candice Bergen, and so many more; went a few rounds (or more) with the likes of Donald Trump and Helen Gurley Brown; and rubbed elbows with Jon Voight, Clark Gable, Clint Eastwood, Frank Sinatra, Orson Welles, Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, and Johnny Carson, among many others. Through it all, Reynolds reflects on his personal pitfalls and recoveries and refocuses his attention on his legacy as a father and an acting teacher, leaving readers with a classic from one of Hollywood’s most enduring and treasured stars.

Critic reviews

“The literary equivalent of finding oneself at a cocktail party with the guy who tells the best stories.... It’s juicy, but not salacious, gracious without being cloying and ultimately impresses...such a joy to read.”(Palm Beach Post)

“[W]ildly entertaining.... Highlights - and lowlights - from his colorful past include playing football at Florida State, romances (Loni Anderson, Sally Field), debilitating health problems and a bankruptcy.” (The Hollywood Reporter)

“Throughout this often-surprising life story - capably coauthored by veteran showbiz writer Winokur-Reynolds reveals himself to be more thoughtful and introspective than his public image might suggest.” (Booklist)

Burt's story!

I met Burt Reynolds when he was involved in making the first major movie, filmed entirely in Arkansas. I was a kid interrupting his lunch at the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church in Benton to get an autograph. He was friendly and gracious and insisted my buddy and I should also get the autographs if another guy eating there named Bo Hopkins.

I take him at his word during the reading of this book, and it seems to ring true. He talks about pretty much everything I have ever wondered about.

His voice is not always strong, but when he goes into character it always is, and the emotions are real. I dare you to hear him say that when his dad finally said he loved him that it made him cry and it still does only to hear it in his voice, and not cry a little yourself.

I enjoyed this immensely. My autograph from Burt was signed to me from, "your friend, Burt Reynolds". I always thought of him as a friend. I still do.

Incredible life!

This is a wonderful book read by Burt with a lot of emotions. The book is filled with his life stories of people he has loved and people he's disliked. I very much loved this book especially when he speaks on Sally Field and Dom DeLuise. I would recommend this book with all my heart!

Pull up a chair and listen to Burt Reynolds

Two days was all it took to complete. It was like sitting in the living room listening to your grandfather tell a story. I'm not saying grandfather because of age. He's a couple of years older than my dad. But when your grandparents share little bits of their lives, you listen intently. That I did.

He was funny. The Marlon Brandon story was funny and snarky. He could be mean, and he said so too. My favorite story was the time he spent with Bette Davis. I never knew he'd done so many films and television. He talks about everybody. It isn't mean spirited. At least it didn't seem so to me because he is also self-deprecating too. There really seemed to be no regrets just sharing life experiences...like your grandfather would. If you are looking to hear something bad about Loni Anderson, it really isn't there. Sure, she's mentioned. He said what he had to say and moved on. That might be the shortest story there.

The audio was a bit weird. Often, I thought I heard papers rustling, or heard pen to paper scratching out a section. Overall, the audiobook seemed warm and inviting, so I overlooked the scratching. Sometimes, Mr. Reynolds voice got tired. When the stories changed, sometimes his voice would pep up. But it didn't detract from his stories. They were great!

I Would Recommend

It was very interesting to hear Burt''s tales of the movies that he's made and the people he has worked with along the way, the close friendships he had with many of those people ...and the women he dated over the years. Smokey and the Bandit was a hit when I was 11 years old and I have the soundtrack album to the movie. It's still a favorite movie of mine, Hearing Burt talks of the making of the movie and how it all came about was very interesting to me. He has definitely had some ups and downs, most of us have and that makes him even more enduring. Burt reads this book to the listener and at times his age shows with the voice of a senior....soft and a little hard to understand. I'm not criticizing, because it adds to the sincerity of the book and where Burt is in his journey of life. I'm glad he chose to tell his story.

Part biography/Part History of Old Hollywood

If you could sum up But Enough About Me in three words, what would they be?

History, Emotion, Fun

What did you like best about this story?

I expected to get Burt's story, however, I was delighted with all the little stories of old hollywood that he told. Bonus: he has quite a mind for critiquing old films. Anyone who enjoys TCM should listen to this.

Any additional comments?

Burt doesn't just read his own book, he relives it as he reads. There are spots where he is overcome with emotion. When you hear those, you'll feel it too. There's a raw emotional honesty here that was surprising and charming. What a treat of a book!

Getting to know a legend

I have a disclaimer to begin with. Looking back at my life I have always been drawn to biographies. As a little girl I checked every biography out that our library had...Florence nightingale , Babe Ruth , to Washington Carver and I loved them all. So I have to say I didn't really remember much about Burt Reynolds but I liked the title and thought why not
I loved the book. I loved that he read it. I loved that his voice sounded older and faltered from time to time. I loved his stories. I truly wish that I would have the opportunity to be his friend. That is what I would tell a friend. I also realize someone else might have a totally different view I hope I enjoy the next book as much as I did this one

A Must

I never took Burt Reynolds seriously. A mistake. I never dreamed that he was such a deep person. To be honest, this is more of a series of biographies of persons that he has known than an autobiography until the last chapter when he reflects upon his life. I will listen to that again and again. Few with the intelligence he has have lived such a life. It is beyond anything any of us have experienced and there are lessons there for all of us.

Really enjoyed it

As wonderful as this book is, it is sometimes very hard to understand Burt. That being said, I like when the author reads his/her memoir. Brought tears to my eyes several times. Worth listening to.

Absolutely wonderful

What made the experience of listening to But Enough About Me the most enjoyable?

Burt Reynolds has a wonderful sense of humor.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Well, of course, Burt.

Any additional comments?

I was a Burt Reynolds fan...at first. Then I wasn't...later on. I'm back on his side now. Burt's inner strength shows in this book and his honesty about the mistakes he has made in life won me back as a fan again. Thanks, Burt.

Burt's got some great stories

What made the experience of listening to But Enough About Me the most enjoyable?

He's a real guy and didn't come off as a showoff. He is unassuming and gives credit where credit is due.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved that he wasn't afraid to dish. He told it like it was - if he didn't like someone he told you! If someone had a great influence on him, he told you. He had great stories from old time movie star interactions to recent. I guess I didn't even realize he was around or old enough to have met Mae West, and some of the other greats.

How could the performance have been better?

I thought the recording was rather inept. You could hear what sounded like the pages ruffling as they were turned. It was a bit distracting.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

He choked up a few times when speaking of certain people but I can't really tell if I liked it or it made me feel weird!

Any additional comments?

Good book for listening in the car during my long commute. I find in the car the autobiographies and memoirs are the easiest to listen to as they are like talking to someone in the other seat - although they are doing all the talking!
