Publisher's summary

Ellen’s son hates her. Her husband wants a divorce. Her only solace is in her work.

A nightshift at the morgue turns sinister when bodies start arriving at an alarming rate. The drivers are weird, sarcastic, and seem to be playing some kind of game. The cadavers are even stranger.

With darkness closing in on all sides. Ellen must venture into a horrifying parody of her hometown to save her family before they’re lost forever.

Burden is a terrifying tale of guilt, grief, and betrayal.

Burden

Spooky, bizarre, and much deeper than I expected. Weird things start happening out of nowhere to the very intriguing main character, Ellen. I listened to the audiobook and had to backtrack sometimes to try to figure out how we ended up in such an strange scene with peculiar things happening.

The audiobook narrator brought Ellen and the story to life very well. The pacing was great! I wanted to keep listening to hopefully figure it all out in the end. At first listen, the ending seemed too simple but after I listened again and thought about it I was more satisfied. I see that it could have multiple interpretations and that goes well with the story. It’s kind of the perfect ending.

What a wild and bizarre ride. I loved it!

That was a wild ride. It went a completely different direction than I thought it would be. I was unnerved at the thought of the main character working for a morgue. The first third was tense similar to the atmosphere of the beginning of autopsy of Jane doe. You get a false sense of security like oh just an average morgue story , strange body strange things I’ve read this before. Then it’s just bizarre and you’re immersed into the story. Then the ending was crazier so many twists. The audio was great the actress really brought the main character alive. I laughed aloud at the noise she made at a certain time stamp. I played it twice lol

highly reccomend

This was such a fun and bizarre book.
For how short it is it does such a good job in keeping the atmosphere, and characters that are developed.
I wish it had kept its mood until the very last second, but the rest of the book is just so unusual that I don't mind.

Beware of What Lurks ....

Thank You Matt Duchossoy for gifting this really skin Crawling Psychological Thriller.

This Disturbing short story is filled with Jumpscares and Funny Humor to Break Up the mounting tension . The Twist was really surprising . It really is a tear jerker. Have a box of keenix near by.

It gave me strong Unsettling Feelings like the movie Last Shift 2014 did in the beginning of this story. As it moves deeper into the story, a feeling of claustrophobia starts to creep up starting from your toes like in the movie Pontypool 2008. There are Red Herrings if you pay really close attention to the Brilliantly written Twist. I highly recommend this for everyone that enjoys a good scare.

Creepy and tense from start to finish …

This novella was creepy and tense from start to finish. It really keeps you on edge and at times disoriented. For a novella length story the characters were well developed. Engaging, unpredictable and hard to put down. I would strongly recommend this book to fans of thrillers and horror. I did an immersion read with both the kindle and audiobook but if you are going to choose one I would recommend the audiobook. Solid performance.

Truly creepy!

What a totally creepy cover to look at while listening to the audiobook! And, the story itself is weirdly horrific, too!

Ellen works in a mortuary at night (not creepy at all, right?). Her husband wants a divorce and her son hates her. Things start to get very weird when cadavers start showing up in a disturbing state after being delivered by two strange attendants.

Meanwhile, darkness is closing in around the town, the phones don't work, and Ellen decides that she has to find her son, Ted. But, when she ventures out into the darkness, her whole world is turned upside down.

The author has created a great horror story with wonderful character development in just a few pages. The narrator does a great job and added a lot to the feel of the story. I will definitely be reading more by this author!

Great

This was a great audiobook. The story really went places I wasn’t expecting. The narrator, Louise was great. It was short and intense, and captivating. I highly recommend.

A Story That Leaves You Unnerved in the Best Way

Burden by Matt Duchossoy is going to have you asking, "What's going on?!" Though the entire thing. A weird little story about a mortician working the night shift and bodies keep being dropped off at alarming rates. Every single time you think you've figured it out, you haven't. There was something about this one that was really unnerving, too, but even after finishing it, I can't quite figure out what it was about it. I mean that in the best way a horror fan can. The descriptions are grotesque to the point that at least 3 different scenes made me physically cringe. I definitely wouldn't call this story extreme horror. But it's not your usual horror story either. If you want a quick read that leaves you feeling unnerved and a bit paranoid, I absolutely recommend Burden.

Miss Louise Cooksey did a wonderful job narrating this for audible. She built the tension and confusion beautifully. She's definitely not a voice I wanna hear just before bed, though. It's forever associated with tension and feeling uncomfortable now.

Thank you again Mr. Duchossoy for my audible copy and kindle copy of Burden. I love spending my time in your stories.

I now know what it feels like to trip acid.

Wow, this was a wild ride! I worked in a morgue so it was fun to hear these events taking place while envisioning it at my old place of employment. Definitely one of a kind!
