An Orks novel

When Ufthak and his orks attack the forge world of Hephaesto, the last thing they want is to share the spoils with the notorious Kaptin Badrukk. But with armies to defeat and loot to seize, Ufthak's boyz might just need Badrukk's help - though that doesn't mean they can trust him....

Listen to it because: get into the heads of a band of orks in the first-ever novel from their point of view. Discover what it takes to be part of the Waaagh! and carve out your own little piece of glory amidst the mayhem in a novel that's brutal, kunnin' - and darkly hilarious.

The story: Ufthak Blackhawk and the green tide descend upon Hephaesto - an Adeptus Mechanicus forge world bristling with loot - only to find it already under siege by the notorious Freebooter Kaptin Badrukk. When his warboss, Da Biggest Big Mek, orders temporary co-operation, Ufthak seeks to make a name for himself by crushing some of the Imperium’s most advanced defenders and claiming the greatest prize. But with a sinister new war machine on the horizon, Badrukk’s plotting and a thoroughly annoying grot in his way, Ufthak is going to need the brutal kunnin’ of Mork himself just to survive.

Listen up ya git! This here was a zoggin good time, there was at least 5 good scraps to listen to. Maybe more, but countin past 5 is hard. Ze boys delivered all the dakka to the stinken 'umies and their tin cans. There was krumpin, stompin, zappin, but even betta, was the WWAAAAGHHHHH!

Ad Mech Fanfiction

As an ork player I struggled to enjoy this book. what was advertised as a book about orks from the ork perspective actually turned out that they barely toe into the limelight. Uftak and his boyz serve as the backdrop to a story about introducing and launching Ad Mech protagonists and their story about internal politics amongst the mechanicus and how overly capable the "good guys" with dealing with orks and the heretical corruption. Honestly ork narrative is about 30% of this book. It is like the author wanted to pine about admech but GW Publishing was like "ok but write about orks first." What we get is a defiant piece of literature where orks are barely and shallowly represented and used as a vehicle to Kickstart a book series about a tech priest and her Sicarian sidekick as they effortlessly survive and defeat any enemy that comes their way. Jesus, even Uftak struggled in his personal melees against named admech characters. Seriously disappointed. The narration didn't help in the slightest as they made the orks sound like incompetent, bumbling stooges and the delivery felt like I was reading a teenager's fanfiction.

meh

Story was ok. was expecting it to be told solely from the perspective of the orks, not multiple sides. The acting of the orks was sub par. To quiet, not enough dakka!

A fun romp with some flaws

First of all, I enjoyed this book a lot. It was fun and funny with serious moments spaced out well. However, this book was advertised as focusing on the ork perspective. Upon listening, it was only about one third to one half, with the rest of the actual plot and meaty story happening to the mechanicus and lurking enemies there in. The ork perspective you get, feels like a Mary Sue with everything going too well.

It is, however, a fun listen with a good reader. Has problems, but is good.

OI YA GIT!

Diz 'ere iz a proppa story, wiv plenty uv 'onest Ork ak-shunn, givin da humies a solid krumpin'. Da parts about da humies ain't so bad ei'vur, even if dey iz a bit squishy, but da humie mek boyz is also made uv metal, so I guess dey ain't as squishy as uver humies, just not as tough as beakies. Any whatsit, youz is gonna luv da Orky bitz, even if da voice dat iz doin da talky bitz on your story box sounds a bit funny at first.

Could have been much better

The story had a great deal of potential to be a fun Ork based novel. However it's a little too heavy on the AdMech which is turn is a bit dull.

Also, the strange way the author refers to certain single characters in plural is extremely confusing, to the point where I had to re-listen to parts to try to figure out what was actually happening. Calling a single character "they" or "them" doesn't make sense. At first I thought it must be a typo that the narrator chose to read but it's consistent and annoying!

The narrator gets an "E" for "effort". He is clearly skilled but is not the right person for the job. The humans sound fine but his "Ork" voices just don't sound right.

I gave this a low score because I'm more then half way through and I'm not sure I'm interested in finishing it.

Dis is a thumpin good story. Dat hoomie who did all dem voices was dead clevah, at firsts I faughts he was an Ork! At points I found da story a bits hard to follows buh dat was mostly jus cos of all da Grots an Sqwigs making noise while I was tryin to fink.

I fugroly enjoyd dis story, der was plenty of daka. I will reco, recum, recer... make all mi bois lis ten toos it.

great story..shame about the narration

I really loved the story. been waiting for a good ork book to get ma teef into. but I'm a bit disappointed in the narration. it really feels like Tom Allenby didn't really do his research, gits, boyz n boss orks should have a much gruffer heavier voice. he should have kept the whining voices for dem krumpin grots and given the main characters proppa ard voices! like lock stock. luckily the writings good enough to take your attention away.

A zoggin' great time

Mike Brookes proves that you can have compelling point-of-view xenos characters even when they're as different as orks.

This is one of the best 40k novels in a long time and I'll be recommending it to everyone. It's fun, exciting, and I genuinely didn't know what would happen next. You can probably already guess that the orks are very funny, but it also shows how formidable and terrifying they can be, as well as getting plenty of laughs out of me for the Adeptus Mechanicus characters. The two 'sides' (though both orks and AdMech clearly aren't united sides and there's as much fighting amongst themselves as there is against each other)) are both funny and potent in their own ways, it was a great choice of dichotomy.

The narration is mostly good, and credit where it's due for getting properly into the roaring, but a lot of the ork voices don't sound right and are a bit annoying. Particularly Badrukk who sounds a bit like an elderly chap with a speech impediment rather than the top swashbuckling Kaptin. The main 'protagonist' ork sounds good though, and again, credit where it's due for getting stuck in and taking on the tough job of trying to give every ork a distinctive voice.

Waaagh

A great book grasps the tone of the Orks really, having them as aliens rather than big green humans. The Ad Mech POV adds excellent, and often hilarious, context to the whole piece. Thoroughly enjoyable and an excellent addition to the setting.

Itz da biggest n da smashiest yet!

Me 'eads not one dat likes 'em humie storyz much. But dis one is da orkiest, brutalist, n most kleverist one I've 'eard. If ya like dem der beaky noised humie meks, well ya aint seen nothin' yet. An' if ya don't den der is alwayz plenty of humie teef gettin' punched, 'specially dem ones dat don't bleed right, but crunch realz good.

A proper read for an Ork lover

This zany novel is outstanding in its execution and narration. If you have ever wanted to know what its like to be in an Ork mob look no further. The narration of the novel brings life to the race and each encounter brings surly characters and humour into a beautiful mesh that leaves the reader chuckling at the grim eccentric acts of the Orks.

Brutal yet cunning

Not a massive Ork person myself, more Tyranid/Necron/Knights myself but very impressed. Love the contrast between the AdMech and Orks sides. Voices of Orks aren’t exactly what I was expecting but were serviceable.
