Publisher's summary

A soul-stirring new musical conceived by New York Times best-selling novelist Jodi Picoult and playwright Timothy Allen McDonald, Breathe places listeners inside the walls of five homes during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Filled with songs and vignettes that examine new relationships, rekindling flames, parenting, racial reckoning, and grief during a pandemic, this incredibly timely world premiere—written and produced online in 2020 in real-time as events unfolded—reflects the very topics that weighed on the hearts and minds of Americans.

Featuring heartwarming music from five different songwriting teams—Rebecca Murillo and Rob Rokicki, Daniel Mertzlufft and Kate Leonard, Doug Besterman and Sharon Vaughn, Douglas Lyons and Ethan Pakchar, and Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich—and mindblowing performances from Broadway’s top talent—Tony Award® winners Kelli O’Hara, Brian Stokes-Mitchell and Matt Doyle; Tony nominee Denée Benton; and powerhouses Patti Murin, Colin Donnell, T. Oliver Reid, Daniel Yearwood, Max Clayton, Rubén J. Carbajal, and Josh Davis— Breathe is a powerfully touching production that shines a glimmering light on the reality of adjusting to a virtual world.

Reminder

I think 3 years after the pandemic started we have forgotten what it was like in the beginning and how scary and this book reminds us of that and how many lives were lost.

Interesting story

I would give 3.5 stars. I would probably like it more if the voices of Devon & his dad had melded better. Also, a few days passed between when I started & finished & I think that made me struggle to remember names at the end. I think I would like it better as an in-person musical.

Wasn't Expecting the Pleasing Results. Wow!

This musical was excellent from beginning to end. I wasn't expecting this. Each story was identifiable and relatable to real life during the pandemic. Kudos to the singers and Jodi Picoult & Timothy Allen McDonald for this great musical.

So I started out very confused lol

I was hadn't realized this was a musical lol! Till it started. Totally caught me off guard. I think in the beginning I was caught off guard so I didn't really care for the story. I have a bad habit of not reading book blurbs and just diving in. However, once I accepted that this was a musical that I had the create visuals for, I liked it. 2020 in a nutshell.

Great music and interesting stories

It brought me back and really captured some of the fears I (many of us) had in the beginning days of the pandemic. The music and singing were wonderful, and the stories were engaging.

Entertaining & Heartfelt

An inventive way to capture the craziness of 2020. Just the right amount of uncomfortable. Catchy and heartfelt songs; I look forward to a soundtrack coming out some day!

Great idea, but the subject need fresh breath of air.

This was a good idea, but to use the epidemic so soon seems desperate, and without the time needed for true depth.
